Building: Built orignal avon sprint k series 1.8 vvc

Any bmw experts , advice needed.

My wifes x3 has a leak on the front drive output of the transfer box. I have ordered a new seal and fluid , cant find out if seal needs the transfer box to be split to fit, or simply remove front prop pull the output flange out and fit seal, anyone know.
