Zetec sump mod

Hello all
I’m taking my sump to be modified tomorrow and I’m wondering what the safe oil capacity would be.
It is a 1.8 Zetec the recommended capacity is 4.25 Ltrs
My 1st plan is to have 15mm taken of the deep side and 5mm off the shallow.
2nd plan 20mm off the deep side 10mm off the shallow.
This is an Escort sump (and yes it does need to be shortened)
It’s been on the car for 7 years and I’ve had enough of it catching.

Who’s good at maths?
I’ve Roughly worked it out that plan 1 will reduce the capacity down to 3.85Ltrs.
(width 180mm x length 225mm x depth being removed 15mm)

However I tried an experiment that told me different.
I put the sump level and filled with 4.25Ltrs and marked a line then marked another line 15mm lower and filled to this mark recording the amount I put in, and I only got 2.7Ltrs in, until I reached the line. Where am I going wrong?
Thanks in advance for any help advice.
