expansion tank ? why copper pipes ?

Hi all ! Just two questions .firstly there are pieces of copper pipes used in the lines from car heaters to engine .I've never seen this before. Is it good or bad ?is it been used just to join the pipes where they had been damaged maybe ? Secondly which pipes can i tap into to fit an expansion tank please ? Until ive got one fitted there is no easy way of checking how much water is in cooling system . Ive put pictures in my photo archive and now im going to try and get them on here . Copper and brass were always used years ago. However, it is a handy size, stick a yorkshire fitting ring on the end of 15mm copper and it will take 16mm (5/8" old money) hose very nicely.
Downside, it is not ideal with red/orange antifreeze.

Header tanks often have 16mm connection, not always so depends on what you are using.

All cooling systems contain some brass/ copper components any modern antifreeze at the correct concentration in will have no problem protecting these against corrosion.
Proper straight plastic or metal hose joiners and Tees are cheaply available on eBay they are used for fitting LPG conversion.
