Jag V12 bottom ends (YES ENDS plural)

Well, Ive got this little idea on the go at the moment, and it was just a thought for a bit of an hmm project. So I might be looking for a couple of jag V12 bottom ends (staight and preferably not knocking). Definately don't want any heads or ancillaries, flywheels, drive plates. Probably wont want sumps, but not sure at this stage. Front pulley's will not be required, but the bolts at both ends might be an idea.

So, IF anyone has some and wants to get rid of them to me for preferably zilch then let me know. IF I can get this plan together then I might be building a bit of a beast of and engine. And NO it wont be a big V or an X.

Ok then, recreate THE Napier Sabre H24 at approximately 1/2 scale.

They are really heavy, I had a couple of v12's jags XJ12 & XJS also ran a manual 4.0litre XJS for a couple of years, faster and a lot more economic.

Yep The Napier Sabre Engine IS a BIG and HEAVY engine. About the same capacity as the Roll Royce Merlin, but, the Sabre had an awful lot more horse power (over 3000hp). Original engines are nearly as scarce as rocking horse do do's when NOT sectioned. I was thinking. why not try and recreate one using available parts. The Jag V12's would supply suitable crankshafts, connecting rods, pistons and crank case's. The cylinder blocks could (possibly) with some modification, be utilised, in conjunction with top plates (to direct coolant) and individual cylinder heads. the rest of it could be worked out.

When complete you would have a part scale Sabre of about 12 Litres no bigger in reality than a V12, but 24 Cylinder H pattern that would be a bit of a head turner where ever it was run, be it car shows or airshows. But it would not have the million pound rebuild cost that a real genuine Napier Sabre is likely to have.

Just my thoughts. so IF anyone does know of or might be interested, ..............................................................................

Could the BMW M70 be an alternative as this is an aluminium block and are available off ebay. The M70 has no vanos, the M73 which is more available has single vanos but if you are chucking that way then it may not be an issue.

ok... so this sounds a lot of money & time to make, I'm assuming there is some purpose to this? You must have some machine shop to pull this off.

Well, why not. I've not got a lot of money, no money to be honest at this stage. I have time, I have pressence of mind and a degree of intelegent thought. The purpose, why not and belief in my abilities and those around me. Also it's about a belief in this country to try and proove that IF we put our minds to it it CAN be done, current thinking by a lot of people is or seems to be 'oh crap we are in a mire and we cant do that or the other because we are too scared or have no vision and I dont want to risk the £1 I have in my pocket/bank/mattress'. As for machine shop, well they did it in 1940 and they didn't have the tools/machinery available that we have now.

And the sleeve and operating system, well, the sleeve are just cylinder liners (with cut outs for the porting) and are operated by a gear and rotating crank system driven by hollow shafts that carry a drive rod to the rear of the engine. Simples (shnick). The only part which I am still considering at the moment is the block/crank housing assembly.

I would start from scratch and build a model engine of about 25mm bore ,given enough time most parts could be fabricated from machined parts by brazing or milled from solid.A number of aero engines have been built from scratch including merlins and bently rotary engines but it is a completely different matter to make something full size.

Well Paul, the start from scratch model engine IS already underway courtesy of a chap (down south I beleive) of Clem Tomlinson, he just loves the napier engines. You will find his progress down the bottom of the link page.
