MacPherson struts

Hullo.Just joined so forgive me if this has been asked before. I have a 1980 E21 BMW 318i complete minus gearbox which was bought to use for spares for my current trackday car, so naturally I thought I would use this for a Locost donor. Front end is MacP struts. So, can this be modified inany way, or do I try and source a more suitable upright etc and just use the BM engine and rear end? Pretty hard to find Escort/Cortina parts where I am (country South Australia). Any thoughts/suggestions will be much appreciated.

Welcome!!

Not familiar with the BMW setup myself, but plenty of people use ford sierra uprights with a mushroom insert to accept a ball joint so i don't see why not. In fact I am sure there are a few BMW based builds floating round

I bet no one starting a build these days will ever use a cortina or escort again, even sierras are getting rare now. I think the majority of builds will use BMW or MX5's for the near future.

Looks very nicely designed and made, you can see where the money goes when you buy a Dax.

BMW MacPherson struts

Hi all, and thanks for the replies. Had a look at the GKD links; looks like an engineering solution beyond my capabilities. Still, early days yet!
As for gearbox, just in case I have trouble sourcing replacement, anyone know of alternatives e.g.toyota, nissan? I know, BMW theme would be nice, but Oz just doesn't haven't the quantity of donors you have in UK or USA.

Shadow,

G'day. Firstly, for all things clubman in Australia, you should join OzClubbies (http://www.ozclubbies.com.au/). There are LOTS of builders in SA, although most of teh ones I know of are in Adelaide. The biennial Australian Clubman Nationals are on in Tanunda from 17-20 November this year (http://www.clubbiessa.com/clubbie_nationals_2011.shtml). There should be on the order of 100 cars there.

Secondly, another good option for front suspension is Gemini, which have the advantage of being the same 4x100 stud pattern as your E21 donor.

On the subject of donor cars however, if you're intending to road register it, the E21 is definitely not going to pass Again, get onto OzClubbies and ask what the possibilities are in SA (I'm in QLD and things vary a litle state to state).

Hope all this is helpful,

Dominic
