J15 brake pedal / balance bar fitment

While trial fitting the brake pedal I noticed that it actually won't fit!......Actually, it's the balance bar that is the issue, it fouls the side of the pedal box. I'm guessing that I could cut the balance bar down, but I'm not sure that is the only solution. The other option is to drill a large hole / slot on the side of the pedal box to allow it to poke through.

I notice some of the earlier J15 Chassis have the throttle pedal poking through on the outside of the box, mine has everything n the inside (will try and post a pic).

Any thoughts on this?.

While I'm at it......Also note when the master cylinders are fitted, the clutch / brake pedals are pushed quite a way back...again, my guess is they require cutting back a little (on the shaft).

Finally, I remember Jeremy saying it would be a tigh fit if you use integral master cylinders (close to body work). However, I've notcied a few people have managed to make this work....Anyone have any pics of clearence between master cylinders and bodywork?

the pedal box should have a teardrop looking hole that the bar goes through. I had to cut a little more away though as the bar fouled a little.

Yes i had to cut about 10mm off the rod ends. I used a remote resevoir, not integrals. Works fine.
For the clutch I had some spacers made, cant remeber why now though? Might have been too much to cut off the rod.

Standard answer then I'm afraid, ring Jeremy!
Seriously I used ring him several times a month to ask silly questions and he was always willing to provide answers and advice

Mine is the same as Jenko's, looks like Jeremy has varied the design somewhat. I do see problems locking off the ballance bar however, not addressed that issue yet. I have fitted integral Cluch and resivoir, don't know if there is a clearance issue yet. I have a few worries on that score not just the cluch. Must get the front GRP section out of storage soon and try it all. I will post my findings.

I believe there is space for an integral reservoir on the clutch master cylinder as there is no need for a warning light. See http://www.jpsc-online.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=45&start=100 but I would use remote resevoirs for the brake ones. My pedal box is different from yours and I had to enlarge the hole for the balance bar to achieve full movement. If I may say so I should get the clevis ends closer together on the balance bar.

Hope that helps.

Hi Deecee,

Is that your car in the thread?. If so, I've been watching the build progress, eagerly awaiting the next update.

Of interest, the car in the thread does use integral masters for all three (which is what I now have).....Personally I would prefer this because it makes things simpler, and is cheaper.....It's not the end of the world if by the time I fit body work I find it doesn't fit (the non-integral master cylinders have the brake pipe connection in the same place), but we will see.

Hi Paul
No it's not my car on the JPSC thread. I believe the build on that car has stalled for the time being. If you join http://www.jpsc.org.uk/ and have a look at the December Proper Job there is a build article on my car.

I now realise it was your car I was looking at at Abingdon (I was there in my Westfield), and it was this car that finally pushed me over the edge to going the J15 route....Small world.

Wish I got commission on all the kit cars I have had a hand in selling over the years. Used to have an R1 engined Fury and was for ever giving prospective purchasers rides at track days.
