VIN Number Plate

Will something like this pass the IVA?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-or-Trailer-VIN-Plate-Chassis-Number-Box-Trailer-Rivets-YOUR-OWN-TEXT/222913282249?hash=item33e6aac0c9:g:fiMAAOSw20lb6Y8 6

Is riveted on OK or does it have to be either welded or punched into the frame?

Thanks

from iva manual secn 18. statuary plates. note 12

quote:

Note 12: Where the ‘stamped in VIN’ is stamped on to a separate metal plate it must be secured to the frame by a continuous seam weld around the entire length of the plate; tack or spot welding should not be considered an appropriate method of attachment for such a plate. To stamp the number into a tubular chassis member is not always practical but there may be instances where it could be stamped in another similar part of the vehicle structure which is not easily removable

Great info thanks.

And it's OK to stamp the number yourself or does it need to be done by a garage?

It's fine to do it yourself as long as it's clear and visible. I think there's a minimum size for the letters, 3 or 4 mm? I can't remember but someone will know. Has to be on the offside.

DVLA will send a form to you to be filled in by a garage. I suppose the garage has to be MOT Registered to be official. The garage just has to sign the form to confirm that the VIN is correct.

Just checked, 3.5mm min

I did mine on a short length of 1" square tube. I cut out a large slot in the bottom and put a solid block of steel from the bottom to the underside of the top. I was then able to give the stamps a good whack without the tube collapsing. Welded a plate into the slot to make it a tube again, then welded it into a corner of the chassis by the bulkhead.

Thanks, just need to find a set of punches that aren't Chinese rubbish!
