Identifying Diff & LSD
furryeggs - 13/5/15 at 07:08 PM

Could someone please help with a few questions.

-I've been trying to locate infomation on my Diff, I have managed to find codes off the diff casings. I was sold this as a 3.62 sierra diff? I haven't opened the case yet to read and numbers on the crown gear but what I have found points to it being a Scorpio diff. The 2 different numbers on the casing makes me think a different cover has been fitted at some point.

83BG-4025- BE ( from the main casing)
83BG-4033-BA (from the end cover)

Also D04 BA and C9J1A-1

-Rotating the drive flange both shafts turn in the same direction, does this mean its an LSD? It's closer to 3.9 to. (just under 4).

-And lastly without drive shafts, stub axles and drive flanges how can i tell if its push fit or bolt. At £40 it's not a massive issue if it's a duff, but £40 is still £40, if i can use it on my Tiger will.

Many thanks.

Just under 4 - 5 to 12 is indeed a 3.92.

And both outputs going in the same direction points to a viscous LSD.

What does it measure across the mounting points? 7" or bigger.

Mine was a 3.92 viscous 7" LSD diff.

It had bolt on shafts. Don't think any of the LSD riffs had push in shafts.

turning the drive flange, will turn both the outputs the same direction if its lsd or open.

you need to turn one of the output flanges

if the other turns the same way - lsd
if it turns the opposite way - open

it will also be fairly stiff if its a lsd, and pretty free if its open

if its an lsd, its bolt on shafts only
open diffs can be bolt on or pushin

as for the ratio, easiest thing is to just take the rear cover off

are the sierra and scoprio diffs the same? they look it from google images?

The plot thickens, I have removed the end cover to access the crown wheel. there is a ford number stamped it.

83BG 4210 JF 3.92

this number is different to both the others, I have been down to where i used to work at sandicliffe ford and put the number through fords computer and it doesn't match anything. The other numbers do, i seem to have a 7" sierra diff case with a scorpio rear cover but unknown internals?

At least its confirmed a 3.92 ratio and its not LSD.

Everything is explained on the super 7th heaven web site about diff codes, drive shafts etc

i give up

Been there and checked. the code doesn't show anywhere, not even fords computer. I'm pretty sure its a 7" 3.92 open diff, 26 spline with push in shafts. whatever the mistery code is/

thanks for the help anyhow.
