Replacing Pedal Box with OBP (?)
jeffw - 7/1/16 at 12:55 PM

I'm going to have to change from cable clutch to hydraulic in the Phoenix. To do this it seems to make sense to change the pedalbox from top hanger to bottom mounted. It seems that OBP is the best price wise.

So the questions are

Anyone done this to a Striker/Phoenix and what issue did you have
Is OBP an OK brand or do I need to look else where
Which OBP product do I need (assuming they are OK)

Cheers !

Hi Jeff

Their new pro level ones look like nice bits of kit.

I fitted one of their cheaper range back in 2009 and ended up chopping it about.
This was a three pedal, cable clutch setup.

Two main issues -
(1) pedal box flat floor not wide enough for the three pedal set, which is a feature of the Stylus.
Chopped the bottom corner off the throttle end.

(2) not enough throttle pedal travel (ie cable pull mm). The pedal hit the bulkhead before full throttle on the engine single OE Throttle Body. I wanted to retain the OE TB cable quandrant so had to modify the pedal end.
The photos show the shortened pedal I tried, originally it was twice as tall.
In the end I kept the clutch/brakes, and fitted an OBP pendant throttle pedal alongside.

Its still on the car now, so was fine once sorted.

May i ask, off topic a bit, why you are going from overhead to floor mount? I'm curious as I'm pretty set on a top hung Wildwood pedal box...

For no good reason apart from there appears to be a lot of bottom mount pedal boxes around and not many top mount. In the back of my mind I'm sure I've seen an article that says bottom mounted is better...not sure where though.

Thanks Matt, I suspect there will be similar issues in the Phoenix.

main issue of bottom mount vs top mount is the angle/arc of movement required. top mount you can easily move your whole leg and push from the knee, heel sliding along car floor, whereas bottom mount does need a bit more ankle articulation (I found). To be honest I didn't notice it when mocking up in the garage, but it was more noticeable when I had my race boots on which finish up the shin. it was odd at first, but all forgotten when the lights go green ;-)
