convert escort axle to dual cable handbrake

Many years ago to do this I seem to remember Capri 3.0 or 2.8 backplates and drums were used. As these are now a bit rare, can anyone suggest a more obtainable option. I don't want discs, just to ditch useless sliding rod arrangement.

The capri axle had a sliding rod. I just welded two brackets to the axle and used what I think was the allegro cables.

You may have to drill and rotate the back plates to get clearance.
