What do I need

Hi All,

In the winter I want to do a bike conversion.

In hindsight I should of bought a BEC to begin with but I am impatient

What do I need to do the conversion?

I know there are various engines which people use but something popular and easy to source.

If someone could make a list that would be appreciated, my friend brakes bikes and can get me the parts cheap

What rear end does your car have? I am assuming its a live axle?

This thread

thread

also has a lot of useful info & thoughts on either swapping cars or engines

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

Just a thought but would it have to be a bec? As you're running a crossflow a zetec would be an easy swap. For the price if a decent modern bike engine, cradle, power commander, props, headers you could get a nice spec zetec lump with good power?

Love the sound of bike engines.

Would it be an easier conversion for a 2Ltr zetec.

Another questions - ST170 engine be a good conversion? Just there is one being broken locally and the engine and loom/ecu are going for £400?

So many choices

Take a drive down to Edinburgh and the Scottish Kit Car Center, they can show you round their R1 engined car and the Supercharged Zetec car they are building right now.

I am not affiliated to them in any way just trust their honest down to earth advice.

I'd go for a standard duratec and caterham inlet manifold like this one...

and then cams and other mods in the future

What ever way you cut it a full conversion is never as cheap as you think.

Zetec engine is still a heavy lump and requires a fair bit of money thrown at it just to make it RWD but the differnce will be huge in torque and drivability.

I Did this swap a few years back for a friend. Box-stock 2l Zetec, 1800 flywheel, Westfield 'sports' exhaust and manifold, DIY bike ITBs, Emerald ECU, 170bhp. Chalk and cheese compared to the old 130-140bhp Xflow I took out. Way more torque, more power, better driveability, better economy.

Budget a fair few quid for the extras though - water rail, sump, Escort water pump, HP Fuel pump, new tapping point on tank for return line, possible swirl pot, hoses, wiring, 1800 flywheel, inlet manifold and ITBs if you go that way, clutch, engine mounts, probably remote oil filter fittings etc. we paid £150 for the engine, and probably £1000 for the rest! If you buy ITBs, add another £1k. I already had the ECU and ITBs on the Xflow, so it was cheaper.

Then to get the best out of it you would want a 5-speed box and it opens up another set of costs.

If you like the sound of a bike engine and the revs, have you considered an upgrade of your crossflow, if it has a 711 block what about an all steel bottom end, stage 2 or 3 head with a good cam profile and a set of Yamaha R6 throttle bodies.

Let it scream and less temperamental than twin webbers
