Identification & Recommendation (Brakes)

Morning All.

Undressed the Dax yesterday and wanted to confirm my findings on the calipers are installed so i order the correct parts.

Rear - solid Discs are approx 250mm as i measured them while on the car and i found the below part numbers however could not locate what they are anywhere.

Fronts - vented Discs are approx 270mm

Also anyone recommend front discs and pads for track? Im thinking of going yellow stuff pads with drilled and grooved on the front. (rears are in good condition).

3rd photo down, on your pics - the label reading QM47024 could just be masking a Ford trademark, at its right-hand end. If this is the case, the calipers will most likely be Lucas-Girling single-sided models. Could be from original vehicle's front end installation? Any idea of piston dia? Or other cast-in markings?

Work-in-Progress: Changed to Zetec + T9. Still trying!!

they look like standard sierra brakes to me - and as its a dax I'd be surprised if it was anything else

253mm solid rear discs - standard for every sierra with rear discs except cossie's

the matching front would normally be 260mm vented front discs - these are the standard brakes from ordinary sierra's with ABS and some of the V6 cars like XR4i's.
Also these are the same calipers, pads as the XR4x4's (front discs on the 4x4 have a different offset)

however dax did offer an upgrade kit - to move the smaller 240mm disc's calliper out and make use of the cossie ~280mm disc instead - in this case your caliper and pads will come from the bog, std. sierra's with rear drums (think 1.8 / 2.0 pinto or CVH etc.)
I've got a vague recollection that CC&AR cars may use this as standard without adapters - but I need to go and check the manual....

if you post a pic of how the caliper is mounted I could tell you for sure or give me a shout if you want any dimensions checked...

don't worry about the rears - there are only 2 types of caliper - solid or vented - and both use the same pads

the ones form an xr4x4 will be right and make things easy as its one of the few models that only ever had one type fitted...

can't find the definite answer on the front disc and caliper size for the CC&AR setup that you have (uses dax's own bespoke uprights that take sierra hubs and brakes) - but I suspect its the bog std sierra caliper (meant for 240mm vented discs) but mounted over 278mm cossie 4x4 discs - this would explain the large area of the disc that is not being used near the centre

easiest way to check the caliper size is to take the pads off and measure the piston diameter
the smaller ones for have ~54mm pistons (for the 240mm disc) the larger ones have ~60mm pistons (for the 260mm disc)

Will check the caliper pistons at the weekend. What is the benefit of using the 278mm discs if the orginal pads cannot use all the surfacr area?

its further from the centre of the hub, so has longer leverage, think about trying to stop the wheel spinning with your hands - its easier to do it near the edge than it is near the centre...
its simple, but effective

mcerd1 i have to thank you, i reviewed at the weekend and can confirm i have the 54mm caliper piston and 278mm discs

Therefore will be ordering standard sierra mintex pads (assume xr4i?), cossie discs and xr4i rear pads.

^^ almost right - but the front pads are for the bog std. sierra's without ABS which are smaller than the XR ones

looking up the mintex catalogue you'll want the M1144 versions of these:

http://www.mintex.brakebook.com/bb/mintex/en_GB/PKW/36/241/6103/applicationSearch.xhtml

MDB1287 - XR4x4 rear pads (as per your link)

MDB1175 or MDB1883 - 2.0 sierra front pads without ABS - each of these is a very slightly different size so you'll need to check them against the ones you have

these are the MDB1175:

and these are the MDB1883:

^^ its only 1.3mm difference, but its enough to give you a headache, especially at £50 a set !

I don't have these type on mine (I have the larger ones) so I don't have any other suggestions of how you tell one from the other - all I can suggest is that if your current pads are a good fit, then get the ones that are the same size...

(btw mintex pad come with or without wear indicators that are probably no good to you - the ones you've linked to have the indicators)

as for the discs cossie 4x4 front discs (sierra or escort) and XR4x4 rear discs (pick a 2.9 V6 if you need a variant)

I cannot find the code for the M1144 for the MDB1883 anywhere!

When i plug them into Burton Power Website they describe the MDB1183 code as "Mintex M1144 road/rally front brake pads: Ford Puma -02/01, Fiesta 96-1/00 with vented discs, Ka 96-00 with ABS & vented discs"

Bit lost how to order these now

you need to get yourself a set of cheap digital calipers (normally £10 - 20) - these take the guess work

the two types was a surprise to me too - but thats what mintex list.....

other makes sites suggest the size is 151mm, 151.3mm or 151.5mm - so I've no idea which is right

maybe someone else on here can confirm which ones are correct - they are the type thats used with 240mm vented discs

Mintex 1144 Ford Sierra 1.8 MK 2 87 88 Front Race Brake Pads MDB1236

they are still the bigger pads for the bigger calipers (ie the 260mm disc ones that I have)

merlin have the mdb1175:
https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/mintex-racing-brake-pads-mdb1175-m1144-for-ford-various-mdb1175-m1144

burtons also have the mdb1175:
http://www.burtonpower.com/brake-pads-escort-mk3-4-sierra-no-ind-mdb1175m1144.html

as do several sellers on ebay and the 151.4x46.4mm size seems more consistent with other brands catalogues like EBC etc.....
but I'd still want to get an accurate measure of your old ones to me sure

i fitted new discs and the mintex pads and it has been on 2 trackdays and they are amazing!

In regards to disc size for those calipers, depending on how the calipers are mounted on what hubs/brackets and what car they came off.

For example my calipers are sierra and should have normal calipers but these are spaced so i have cossie calipers

The pistons are 59mm wide.
Could these be xr4 calipers for 260mm discs?

Yeah, that sounds right
besides if they turned out to be wrong you should be able to exchange them as long as you get the discs from a decent motorfactor

For comparison these are mine (260mm disc type)
Front Brake Caliper - 260mm
Front Brake Caliper - 260mm

260mm discs are also on the normal sierra's with ABS

avoid the XR4x4 discs, they are 260mm but have smaller offset (same calipers and pads, but a different hub and disc)

Also jumping on this old thread.

Have these calipers on the project we purchased off ebay so not 100% sure what they came off, Ford of some sort, MK1 Cortina?

Car failed on brake balance so we are replacing the discs and pads as they dont look brilliant after being sat for a number of years.

Can someone identify from these markings, sorry picture isn't great was taken quickly while still on the car.

Some more photos of the calipers. M16's or P16's?

Is there are difference in the discs? they currently measure approx 250mm diameter
