Replacing Steering Boss

I currently have a sierra steering column that has a hexagon stub on the end for a removable steering boss. As many others seem to have also found, this isn't ideal as there is a noticeable degree of play in the interface.

Ideally I would like to replace the interface/boss with a multi splined one to eliminate this play. What is the best way to do this? Is it possible to retain my existing column, remove the hexagonal stub and weld a replacement splined stub on?

Thanks.
Oli
