Mk1+2 (like most RWD) the rack is in front of the front axle. The Mk3 (being FWD) has it behind the axle. As a result the rack moves in the opposite direction when the column/pinion is turned.

You could of course use a LHD rack flipped over!

GTM did that with the Libra.
