Interesting major engineering projects
I need to find a major engineering project to review (sucessful or unsucessful) for an assignment at uni. It needs to have a lot of publically
available info on it for research and analysis pursposes.
Faced with such a wide range I dont know what to choose. Anyone got any bright ideas?

JCB Landspeed record vehicle? Ricardo are local to you and they did the engine development. MIRA for Aero also close and if you look on the mira
website you'll find out who gave a presentation on it at Autosport - Don't know if it was him or someone on this forum that actually did
it tho.

Hello mate what type of engineering are you doing? As a mech eng student in Cardiff, the lecturers are pretty keen on the space shuttle disaster, or
if you are more interested in civil, the tapei dam crops up a lot as a case study. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the ideas gents. The JCB one seems to be the favourite at the moment. 
I am not so keen on the civil engineering projects, but the Millau viaduct was one of my initial considerations.
I am doing manufacturing engineering. But basically my interest lies with automotive. Its quite tricky to find the sort of specific info we are
looking for on some types of projects though as they are quite secretive about what details are divulged to the general public!

Or just it's engine/drivetrain. That's got to be the hardest auto thing to hit the road recently.
Or, try the Toyota Prius. Show what a total waste of effort it is, and why it's poo.

What about the Apollo space program (i.e. landing on the moon)? Probably the best engineering achievment of all time. Loads of pioneering
engineering, risky objectives, and spinoff technology entering the medical/consumer/etc industries. Tons of information about it on the net too if
you're interested...

How dare you, Prius is wonderful achievement .........
just failed to meet (in my non technical, personal opinion) its objectives of being a green car.
Apollo - can't cover that one, we all know little green men helped them.

Even NASA said they couldn't get a plane to fly passengers at supersonic speeds, so I'd dispute and go with Concorde.

I'd go with the JCB as well, really interesting project, in that it was done from the outset knowing that it was a flawed way to break the
record, but a great marketing stunt to launch their own engine to market.
A real,"daft idea that we managed to justify" jobbie, and all the better for that, as each "great idea" of the past soon
becomes folly anyway.
Lovely piece of engineering too, having had a good mooch over it at the show.
Retro RWD is the way forward...........automotive fabrication, car restoration, sheetmetal work, engine conversion
