Mocal oil thermostat

I use a oil thermostat on my vw engine,

It open at 80 degrees,

But I rather it opens higher at around 100 as i have a stock oil cooler in place and the engines ran best around 100 degrees

It says it can be changed but I'm unsure how? And one have any ideas? Or remote thermostats that are higher or can be adjusted?

I thought 80 was the optimum temp for oil? 100 degrees sounds way too hot! If the engine is best run at 100 degrees then surely modifications to the cooling system will yield more benefits

I agree with Prawnabie.

The engine may operate better at 100, but that doesnt necessarily mean the oil.

When the oil boils or reaches near boiling point, it oxygenates and starts to break down.

It is a air-cooled vw engine,

I have always been led to believe they are designed to run at 100 degrees,

I don't want to damaged it by over cooling thats all

oil will be ok going over 100 degrees no problem.

i've just fitted a cooler to mine as i was getting it over 120 on hot track days after only 15 minutes out

also the stat will open at 80 but wont the oil temps continue to rise a bit depending on how hard the engines working etc.
i think my stat opens at 80 as well but i'm certain my cooler wont knock 40 degrees of the oil temp

This is not going to help with the thermostat or VW issues, but oil is designed to run a lot hotter than water.

Would normally expect oil temps about 10 degrees more than water temp. Operating Range for semi synthetic oils is about 90-110 and full synthetics are good up to 120. (this is from a couple of very experienced racers)

It takes a lot of heat to boil oil.. (think of a deep fryer which operates over 170 degrees)

Also depends on the grade and quality of the oil
