Clutch pedal stop?
Banana - 26/2/17 at 07:59 PM

Clutch cable snapped yesterday, but luckily it was 50 yards from home

Whats the best way to set the pedal stop? Does it even need one?
I can't move the release arm by hand, so should i just press the pedal until it stops, and set the pedal stop a few mm short of that?

Sort of yes, you need a pedal stop on a bike engined clutch, your leg muscles are a tad stronger than a couple of fingers and you can easily "overthrow" the clutch with your size 9's.

To set mine I put the car in gear, engine stood, press the clutch pedal when I can push/move the car that's where I set the stop.

Sounds a good plan.

I was concerned with not fully disengaging, or as you say, over doing it.

Did you set the resting position of your pedal to be where you cannot move the lever (engine side) by your hand any further?

Resting position as in foot off pedal?

I just ensure there is a little slack in the cable when the pedal is fully "up"

Yes as in foot pedal. Because there is an inch or so of relative free play on the release arm before it gets working.

Will use your suggestion for setting the stop, thanks.

I guess not relevant for you but I've also found that you need one for hydraulic clutches too, otherwise you over-extend the master cylinder and it stops working.

On my car I found that a long nut (a join nut?) on the back of where the foot pad screws into the pedal makes an easy and adjustable stop.

You don't need an inch of free play, you can tighten the cable to remove some of that.

As above you just want a tiny amount of slack so when the clutch is hot and everything has expanded it doesn't cause the clutch to slip
