Rear mudguard clearance?

Simple question- how much clearance do you need between the top of the wheel and the underside of the rear guards?
I dont want acres of free space between my shiny new bodywork and my shiny new wheels!!

(though i dont want to rattle into the bodywork either)

Is it just a case of trying to compress the rear end and adding a wee bit for clearance?

Jumpy - with 16" wheels and off the ground our clearance was about 50mm. Off the blocks and on the ground this became about 25mm. Depends on wheels/tyres and how (eh hem) heavy u are and also what spring ratings you carry.

If you know the full bump length of the shocks then I would take the shocks off and jack up the rear of the car until you have that length between the shock mounts, put the wheel in position and allow an extra 10-20mm above that for the arches.
