Do I need an MOT before 3 years from sva date..?!

Well, I built my loco R1 and had it sva'd in march 2009, tax'd it straight away. Its since been unused (due to a serious back injury and more recently moving house).
I've now decided to get it ready for use again, tried to tax it online and its saying I need an mot cert for it?
Is this corect as I thought it could go 3 years without one?!
Any advice?

Cheers.

Do what I did and tax at your local Post Office.
It does not need an MOT until it is three years old.
DVLA were totally unhelpful when I rang them as they take the date from "year of manufacture" and since on a
self-build you can't prove "year of manufacture" their new system won't cope with it
(the year after first reg. I was able to do it online - so much for DVLA's new system!).
If the local PO queries it tell them they are allowed by DVLA to take date of first registration when issuing the tax disc.

V V Mine is on a Q so no it doesn't make any difference. Chances are you'll be dealing with someone with intelligence at the PO rather than a DVLA drongo.....

I downloaded the following form ---

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/DG_4017716

If your lucky the post office will have one ....

Then took V5 along to post office to prove it was under 3 years old and they overided the computer and gave me a tax disc.

Isn't there a box to tick on the website that says "I don't need an MOT because its less than 3 years old".
