knee injury what happens next

was on my mtb in wales this past weekend and had a bit of an off to cut a long story short i bashed my knee and hand on a big rock hand is ok ish now but i went to A&E in peterborough and had my knee xray'd and there is nothing broken they just said you may have some ligament damage and promply straightend my leg out with some severe pain and fitted a velcro splint on me, now i have just got a letter for an appointment to see an orthopedic (sp) surgeon so what happens next ?

They usually amputate just above the knee so the pain won't be there for too much longer

Knees are a very complicated joint and need very strict care in order to heal fully and give you no cause for concern in the future.

I have had various knee problems before and I have made sure I followed my physios advice to the letter.

I would be booking myself in with a reputable private physio to get an assessment and or a referral, the NHS can take too long as knees need treatment right away in order to begin healing in the correct way.

I hope things progress swiftly for you as I know exactly what you are going through.

In the meantime I'd suggest I.C.E, rest and anti-inflamitory

I = ice it. A bag of rozen peas wrapped in a tea towel (never direct on the skin), 3x 10mins on, 10mins off in the evening.
C = compression. A bandage altough to be honest for I'd avoid this unless you know how to applyit to your knee.
E = elevation. Whenever possible put your leg up, preferably higher than your heart. Try sleeping with it on a pillow.

Stay off the bike,avoid running and sit down whenever you can and take some ibuprofen.

Take it very easy with the joint. As above knees are complex and vulnerable joints and long term damage is easy.

Avoid loading the joint as much as you can and certainly avoid twisting the joint. Adi's advice follows the same advice I've received from my GP and orthopaedic consultant and generally helps.

Having been through the loop of xrays and MRI scans last year to identify a left knee cartelidge tear I had surgery last year to trim it. The recovery was painful and slow and although the original pain has been dealt with I now suffer constant pain and swelling around the inner ligament. I'm due another MRI scan next month to find out what the problem is with probable further surgery to correct it. My right knee is not much better either

I had a bad rugby injury years ago where the ligaments in my knee and ankle were damaged at the same time (it hurt like hell, I have to say).

I saw the club physio and she basically gave me some stretches and exercises to do.

The top and bottom of it is that the people you see in the hospital are trained to spot breaks etc but are not specialists for knees, joints etc. You'll have been referred because they want someone trained in a specialisation to lok at it - surgeory might not be on the cards once they've had a proper look at it (but prepare yourself for some more uncomfortable manipulation!)

i could probably give you more info than you need to know, ive done my left kne ligaments 3 times. 2x medial and 1x anterior cruciate. as well as a cartliage.
first time i ruptured my medial i couldnt move my leg at all for 6 weeks, it swelled up massive and just locked in place.
cruciate was a different story all together.awful!

Well mine doesn't hurt as long as I don't move it and it is swelled up pretty good, but if I try to bend it I can only bend it so far and then I have sudden and extreme pain that seems to come from deep inside the knee combined with a very tight feeling like an elastic band is about to snap.

Fell out of a car once at 40mph and damaged my one knee, they fixed it but everytime the weather goes damp & cold it stiffens up and gives me some jip

Medial and cruciate damage done to the right knee playing 'Mess rugby.' 2 a.m. and very wazzed.
Arthroscopic surgery fixed it, but 30 years later it's the first site the gout attacks. (trauma and all that).
It can be fixed (anything can, with kevlar ligaments 'as good as new' but your body 'remembers' how you mistreated it and pays you back.
