Excess on hire cars

Looking to hire a car from Enterprise, cheapest option is not to pay damage waiver but excess in case of a claim is over £1,0000.

Does that mean that I will be charged that for any claim even if it is for less than that e. G. Replacement tyre?

Also is it likely my own car insurance covers the hire car for theft and damage?

Re. Customers who can provide independent and verified provision to cover damage and theft to the vehicle may be able to decline Damage Waiver.

Whenever I have gone on holiday and hired a car I have bought excess insurance prior to travelling, ever since i realised what a rip off the enhanced insurance that covers the excess is.

Last time i bought it it was 23 quid for a week vs the hire companies cost of about 51 euros per day!

I use Better Safe insurance all the time for this, very cheap.

I always thought it was a rip off but paid it any way. A couple of years ago in Portugal we had quite a bad accident when a nob undertook us on a side margin as we turned right into our accommodation. The cops were there as an ambulance was called but were not interested who was to blame.

The car was totaled and the hire company just said no problem you have paid excess do you want another car. The holiday rep said if we had not payed that we would have had a big bill and lots of agro.

Like the other guys, I pay for an annual excess insurance. £40 annual cover gives you 31 days of car hire excess cover up to £7k. Never needed it so far though.

As per others, I have a separate cover via worldwideinsure.com. Any number of rentals for up to 60 days per hire with up to 4 named drivers at an annual cost of £45.12 (inc. 5% renewal discount). Substantial saving over car rental firms' or hire brokers' excess cover offerings.

Your own car insurance probably specifically says it won't cover hire cars for anything. All of mine have.

thanks for all the answers. the excess of 1,000 - is that what they take regardless of the cost of the damage, even if it happens to be much less?

I had a car with enterprise. My wife put a small scuff under the front bumper.
The excess was 800.
They took 800 from my credit card straight away.
They keep this till they have a repair price.
This took months and lots of phone calls.
Eventually got a final bill of 225 including the time the car was off the road.

The last few times I've taken a car in just pay their excess and drive it like I stole it and park it where I want and nearly hope it gets damaged!

I like the concept of the aftermarket insurance but none I've seen actually state how long it will take before you get refunded.
Anyone have any personal experience of the claim back procedure?

Bet they didn't bother fixing it, but just waited a few months as they knew the front bumper would need a respray after 50 odd other hires in the meantime.

Bet they love it when a punter covers the cost of tidying them up before flogging on.

I always use www.direct-carexcess.co.uk (£40/year) but have never had to claim. I have, however, saved in the region of €100 per hire (for not taking the hire companies super insurance) x 3 holidays abroad for the last 10 years so if I do have to pay out for a repair I won’t be too upset.

If it ain't broken, fix it anyway (just because).
