Ecoboost 1.6 to type 9
maurof74 - 5/1/17 at 12:04 PM

Hi everybody,

Building an Mk Indy with Ecoboost 1.6 and type 9.
I would use std. ecoboost flywheel and pressure plate to keep costs down.
I've found a suitable clutch disk 240mm, 1"×23.
The issue is the bellhousing because the gearbox shaft I have is about 10 mm shortened (cutted) by previous owner to mate with the vauxhall engine C16XE originally installed.
For this reason I decided to reuse the vauxhall to type 9 bell-housing I have, fabricating an adaptor plate 22mm thick.
For the engine side I have the pattern drawings so I can drill it precisely, while for the bellhousing side I did not found anything.

Does anybody have bolt pattern drawing of Vauxhall C16XE ?

Thanks,
Mauro

Sorry I can't reply to your question, and I apology in advance for getting off topic.

I'm considering putting a 1.6 Ecoboost on my Haynes Roadster as well. And being able to re-use my gearbox would be a must!

Could you please tell me, if the gearbox shaft of your type 9 hadn't been shortened and was long enough, could you have fitted the Type 9 directly on the Ecoboost engine without any adaptation?

Is it the same bolt paten on the engine and the type 9 bell housing ? Is it the same diameter and number of splines on the gearbox shaft and the Ecoboost crank?

Again, all my apologies to get off topic.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Ok I try to answer step by step:

1) Clutch disk
The ecoboost clutch disk has a different spline than the type 9 (which is 1" × 23). So for sure you have to change the clutch disk. I've found a clutch disk that should fit (ford focus) without changing flywheel and pressure plate. within next few days I will have the disk for try and I can get back to you with complete info

2) Bell housing
The bolt pattern of the ecoboost 1.6 is the same of sigma se, so there are a lot of sigma se to type 9 bell housing on the market (shawspeed, sbv, titan, tiger) that are suitable for both the main two type 9 shaft std. Length. So pattern is not a problem. The problem is that non of these suppliers guarantees that the bell housing does not hit the flywheel/pressure plate because they use their own clutch and flywheel that I do not want to buy for cost reasons.

So if I had the uncutted shaft the roadmap could be:
- try the cluth disk
- understand if at least one of the available bellhousing does not hit the flywheel/pressure plate (get drawings from supplier ?, send a sketch of the flywheel/clutch plate volume ? get a bell housing to try ? ), eventually with small reworking.

The additional problem of the cuttad shaft, in my case, could be addressed as follows:
- gat a bell housing and shorten it a few millimeters if thickness allows
- forget markets belhousing and use the one I have with adaptor plate of the correct lenght to suit my shaft ( the vauxhall bellhouse I have is shorten then needseven with my cutted shaft
- extend or change the gbx shaft

If you get other info or have any idea I will appreciate sharing.

Mauro

Thank you for the very complete reply.
Ok, the adaptation is not as straight forward as I'd hoped it could have been.
My engine swap is not for now. So I will check on your progress regarding this adaptation.
Thank you very much for having taken the time to answer me.
Good luck!

PowerTorque do a complete kit for the 1.6 Ecoboost (which they supply to Morgan). It comprises of MX5 gearbox, flywheel, clutch, starter, slave cylinder etc. and it’s around £1850+VAT.
Going that route may make things easier for you.

So does the MX5 box bolt straight up to an ecoboost?

To the 2.0 yes. Not the 1.6.

The 2.0 has the same bolt pattern as the 2.0 duratec. The 1.6 has the same pattern as the 1.6 sigma ford engine.

Are you sure that's for the 1.6? Morgan use the 2.0 gdi engine which is effectively a non turbo version of the 2.0 ecoboost.

Yes the 1.6, it's a "special". Give them a call and speak to Salv.

Good to know. Thanks for these infos guys.

When time to do the conversion comes, I'll take a closer look at this option.

Considering the power which you can create from the ecoboost I would be concerned about how long a type 9 would last.

My suggestion would be to sell the type 9 as their value is going up as they are getting rarer. By a Mazda RX8 box and conversion plate with the money you get for the type 9. Overall cost should be lower as you don't need a new type 9 bellhousing. Alternatively I have a type 9 to sigma/1.6 ecoboost westfield bellhousing I might part with as I'm now planning on the Mazda route for me.

Bellhousing no longer available (some people this place work fast!)
