Yes blacktop to MT75 is fine, you'll need an intermediate plate, I modified the one to match the gearbox.

Starter, I cannot comment on that particular motor, I used a QX Components QS1221.

The blacktop 2 piece sump needs oceans of alloy cutting away to get the starter in, don't be scared..... I ended up using a silvertop sump, check in my archive for pictures etc. including fitting the silvertop windage tray.

Water Rail?

Have heard a lot about this part :-

http://www.burtonpower.com/water-rail-raceline-zetec-e-fz470.html

I know there are other similar solutions. Are they really necessary?

Work-in-Progress: Changed to Zetec + T9. Still trying!!

Don't waste your money on a water rail unless it wont fit with out.

Dust cover, draw around the bell housing and cut it out. I make mine around 1.5mm thick.

Starter, should do if it was dohc 4x4. Pinto will need a spacer.

Sump, yep lots of chopping and the bowl will want modifying for the cross member wont it ?

I chop an inch of the bottom of the Mt75 as well.

Most people just use the dohc or cvh starter then the spacer is not needed.

If it is going in a Transit then don't you want a Transit MT75 so the gear lever is in the right place?

Transit bell housing is massive and has an adaptor plate on the back of the engine.

I thought all uk sierras had the starter on the Near side (exhausts side on a cvh or zetec). Every zetec conversion ive seen or done was with the starter on the exhaust side.

I know the escort Rs bell housing has mounts both side.

The short answer is you need what ever starter was attached to that gearbox when it left the factory.

Do you no what spec and continent that car was sold to ?

My guess is a German 2.0 dohc Sierra or Granada ?

So a 4x4i starter will fit if its 2.0 dohc 4x4i eu spec.

As for the clearance on the sump you have to keep chopping it away until it fits but don't go to far as you will go through.

Like I say every sierra and Granada I've had and I've had twelve or so, the starter has been passenger side.

The 2.0L Scorpio had the starter on the opposite side to the sierra, it also had a hydraulic clutch IIRC, so could be another clue as to where the box is from...

From what I've read, if the starter is on the inlet side, you need the Lucas LRS758 or equivalent.

Cross-reference table here... http://www.woodauto.com/Component.aspx?Ref=STR2009

But do check before buying!
