I've got this on both my home PC and work PC after upgrading to Windows 7.
My folders in Local Disk C/Users are a complete mess, lots are locked, lots are empty, I don't seem to be able to delete the empty ones or access
the locked ones, I think it's where is moved them over from the previous version on Windows.
Is there any easy way to sort out this mess? It's really annoying when it won't even let me delete them.

I downloaded an unlocker program that added some functionality to my right click menu, but I'm not at home and can't remember the name of it
for the life of me!

You sure you want to delete the Default User folder? I don't know Windows 7 but in every other version that's the default profile from which
any other new profiles are built.
I used to modify this profile for work 'builds' so that new users to a PC still got the standard proscribed profile on their PC.
If you want a 'clean' hard drive there really is no alternative but wiping and starting with a fresh disk!

3 of my mates have had huge problems straight from the box on new oem laptops.
2 no longer work at all and the other just wont connect to any wireless
its crap and ill conceived from what i can tell. IMHO
windows 7 was supposed to be better than the mac OS Snow Leopard.....
I'm buying an imac on friday, to go with my macbook - see the light!!!
This usually sorts it out,
it's just a bit of a security thing to make it less easy for people to get at your files if they nick your computer and install windows again.
The FUD regarding W7 is amazing, sure a few machines might have some issues, but all of the installs I know of personally (over 30) are flawless.
I'd guess the issues described by richardh, are either hardware or driver issues. Which have little to do with the OS.

Thanks Craig, that software helped .... and no, I don't want a Mac, thank you, tried to use one for a while, don't like the interface at
all, and I don't like the idea of paying twice as much for a comparable machine just so it looks pretty.

And yes, I've also found Windows 7 to be extremely stable and very good and easy to use, I don't think I'll be ditching it on your say
