New computer and no sound......
clairetoo - 12/2/10 at 09:09 PM

I have finally given in and got myself a `new' computer - I've put in a `new' hard drive and installed windows XP (good ol' ebay ) , and finally got it all working tonight - dead chuffed
But............I cant get anything out of the speakers (other than a light crackle when the plug is inserted)
I have re-used my old monitor , keyboard and speakers - and it's just the speakers that wont work

Any ideas ? ? ?

Is there a speaker icon in the bottom right next to the clock?

If not the soundcard may (not conclusive but a good start) not be installed?

Not on mute is it?

probably need to install the sound card drivers.

Have you looked at the device manager to see if the drivers are installed properly?

Yep probably need the driver installing, if you don't know the brand of soundcard or mainboard that you have download and install a copy of everest free edition and that will tell you the makers of said bits.

If it a branded pc then just go to the vendors site and get em.

Go to device manager, right click on the soundcard and click properties. Go to the Details tab and select Hardware Ids from the pull down list. You'll see a string of gobbledy gook with PID and VID numbers in it like this (USBVid_0763&Pid_1002&Rev_0121
). Triple click on the string to select it all and press ctrl-c to copy.

Now go to www.devid.info and paste the gobbledy gook into the box and click Go. This will identify your soundcard and give you direct links to download the drivers.

No need to install any extra software to find the drivers, and it works every time!

Do the speakers work when plugged into something else? Only ask because the number of things that managed to break by being unplugged is ridiculous

They work fine on the old computer , but the odd thing is theres only one wire - they are part of the monitor (which is working fine)
I'll have a try later - just spent most of this morning getting my email working
