I do this for a living, not as many tower cranes as I used to though. I climb them to carry out thorough examinations for a major insurance company, the saddle or flat tops like those are easy (I do wear a full body harness though!). The difficulty comes in climbing out on a luffer, where the jib 'luffs' or 'dereks' up and down. These can't usually get 'flat jibbed', meaning climbing out to the end is not too bad, as it's uphill, (25 degrees ish) and you can hook your feet behind the jib stays! Climbing back in is a swine, especially if it's sloppy/wet. The bigger the crane the worse it is, as the gaps between the jib stays get bigger, the crane in the video has a welded handrail, which you don't get on a lot of them! I have some great pictures, including from the top of the new 'shard of glass' building, many in canary wharf, and even some from the top of the Severn bridge towers.

PS - those kids have some balls!

The tower mast video posted up a few weeks back is WAAAAAAY more hardcore!

Thd guys that work for me are steeplejacks. They w.ould do that sort of thing and do work. The cooling towers and large concrete towers just have climbing step irons they used to do all this without harnesses etc. I've been down the Nat west tower ron a boatswains chair no harness. Climbing in at the top was a bit hairy though

A few years ago I was in Belgium at a Herc boogie ( a big skydiving event) On the first lift the load master of the Hercules opened the tailgate and stood on the edge spotting as we call it , he had no safety harness or emergency rig of any type, all the was attached to the plane was the cable for his headphones. All this with something like 18,000 feet of fresh air below him. I did notice on later jumps he had on an emergency parachute , even that was just hung from his shoulders without the legstraps being done up. There was also a couple of locals went up on one lift I was on that were taking photos , one was wearing a safety harness holding his mate around the waist whilst the mate was leaning over the edge of the tailgate with his camera.

If I had to go over that bridge I wouldn't take that route, bloody route.

worked on radio and cell towers for a number of years, I was darn good at it too. but not sure I would do that without a safety harness and a line connected.
I'd never be able to BASE jump, I've got a too finely honed desire not to fall.
