Ford Duratec V6

Is this engine ,as fitted to the Mondeo and Cougar, the same engine as fitted to the Probe/Mazda?
i.e Will the MX5 gearbox fit? Or more likely the Getrag 221 from the Jag S type?

I have been looking for a Probe V6 engine, they seem to be rather rare, but the Duratec V6 is plentiful and cheap

So far we have broken two cars just for the engine - one a low mileage Mx6 auto which cost a staggering £95......
I have a couple of dead engines here - one of which is going to be rebuilt for a project (may well end up using both to make one good one !)

The Duratec v6 is related to the Jag 2.5 and 3.0l v6, the S type 3.0l seem to able to be bought at a reasonable price and if you are lucky it comes with a manual gearbox. Have a look at the M-tec automotive mx5 with a jag 3.0l v6 in it on youtube, they have a fitting kit for the mx5 gearbox. The Duratec was also the basis for the Noble m12 engine with a turbo added.

Fed up of that bike engine already ? It took me about 10 months. If you look around you can pick up S2000 engine and boxes for reasonable money. I broke even after selling all my bec related parts on.

No not really, I love the whole experience of the BEC, but after 2 summers I'm up for a challenge
I have decided against a four pot, want something a little more interesting with 6 or 8 cylinders, the Mazda/Jag/Duratec route
seems to offer a lot for not much money
I have to say that my first choice was going to be a ZX12R, until I saw the prices

Just a few comments on these engines having played around with an MX6 and got a mate who has a Jag v6 that he is looking to put in a Scimitar.

KLDE - MX6/Probe engine

Very interesting engine as it has a Dizzy but ecu controlled injection. Usual mods (pioneered by ClaireToo) are to ditch both dizzy and injection, add a megasquirt and Triumph 955i throttle bodies (ports match pretty well) use an adaptor plate and an MX5 gearbox. This lot on standard cams will get you just over 200hp every day. There is a Jap version of the engine, KLZE, which has different ports and cams and can make a bit more but like rocking horse droppings. Loads of these build on mx5nutz but Clairetoo is the person to ask about these (commented already on this thread). I also have a few tuning bits left over from the MX6 if you go down this route (Stainless exhaust, injectors, coil pack)

Duratec V6 - Jag, Mondeo, Cougar

Lost of potential but a bit bigger I think physically.

Mondeo/Cougar version probably more difficult to fit but easier to run (if that makes sense) as it does not have the VCT (unless you go for the ST220 I think) but will need an adaptor or new bellhousing for RWD.

The Jag is easier as it already has a rwd gearbox but does have VCT which needs mapping, the Jag also has an interesting fuel rail as does not have a return and the pressure is computer controlled, best to mod this to put a return and regulator on it. The VCT is not a big problem as the usual work around is to use an aftermarket ecu and just set the VCT to go off/on/off at the right rpm, basically turning this into as Vtec. This works well for the 1.7 SE and the ST170 and going by the video on M-Tech rollers they seem to have cracked it with their ECU. Not sure if the Triggerwheels VCT controller has a map in it yet for this engine but may be worth a call. The Jag v6 is 240hp out of the box so should be good for 275 with TB's and a good map. Note also the inlet ports are very long and thin so making a TB manifold may need a bit of thought.

So, if I were in your shoes I'd look for a Jag S-Type 3.0l, bike TB's on a manifold and an M-Tech (already a good starting map although on very expensive Jenvey bodies) or similar ecu plus quite a bit of fabricating and off you go.

As an option there is a Lotus esprit build blog out there that puts a Mondeo inlet manifold on a Jag engine to reduce the bonnet height to good effect with a larger single TB and also a TVR 3000M build on pistonheads forum with ITB's (or maybe twin plenum I can't recall) and finally a Westfield with this engine in it that looks really cool and makes 300hp. Lots of bedtime reading.

Final thought, depending on how deep your pockets are - how about a Cerbera AJP8 engine with T5 gearbox ? Just think of the sound and it is a tiny engine give the power/volume and if looked after a reliable engine. I recon you will need a bout £4k to do that one which is probably double what you will need for the jag v6 swap.

Good luck with the project.

edit - here a bit more info and what you can ultimately get out of it (spoiler alert - 700hp!) - http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=184341

There is also the American Cyclone 3.5 engine in this family if you are willing to import of find someone who will.

How about the big 6 cylynder and box from a Merc Sprinter? They seem to the fastest things out on the roads.

Already rwd and go like stink.. may be rather rapid in a light 7...

The only thing I have to add over what's been said is that the KLDE engine is a LOT smaller than the Duratec. The KL only measures 22" across the standard exhaust manifolds, 22" sump to cam cover tops, and 19" from the standard crank pulley to the back of the block. Having had a Duratec V6 sat on my bench before, it was much bigger and heavier. The KL only weighs 105Kgs complete IIRC.
