Fuel Gauge Problem
ghvh - 12/5/04 at 10:56 PM

I have just refitted my fuel gauge and sender from my donor escort onto my locost but now find it reads half full when the sender is in the empty pos. and shoots off the gauge and smokes??? when the sender is above half way?
These are the Original sender and gauge from the donor Escort and with the voltage regulator.
Can any one help

I did'nt think you needed voltage regulators with the old ford stuff??????

On our tank with a ford sender (sierra) we need to add a resistor inline with the sender wire as it shows a quarter of a tank on empty.

I got a multimeter and checked the ohms on empty and full then calculated what resistor I would need to re-adjust the reading.

Dunno why your getting problems but the MkII Escort dash did contain a Voltage Regulator for the temp and fuel gauges.

Sounds like your regulator isn't working properly and the voltage is too high. You'll need to check the output voltage from the regulator using an analogue meter. Should be about 10v.

I would be concerned about the smoke -

As the say no smoke with out FIRE and you've PETROL + AIR in the Tank. The SMOKE is the source of ignition.

Smoke came from the gauge not the sender, not good but no bang!

Will check the voltage at the regulator

Thanks
