Phone with decent camera

Hi Guys

Looking for a phone with a decent camera to replace my ageing Samsung S5. The Samsung takes great pics but ideally looking for something with dual lenses, ie a phone having camera with optical zoom rather than just digital, not particularly bothered about screen size, nearly everything seems to be 5" plus nowadays & as regards other features, I'd be pretty disappointed if it couldn't do batter than a 5 year old Samsung!

I know there's quite a bit out there, particularly from Huawei, but seems really pricey (yes I'm a tight git!) & I'd be a bit bothered with buying Huawei given the current disagreement with Google etc. I don't really want to pay more than £200 for an unlocked phone

I'd be happy to buy decent second hand or reconditioned

Would like to hear what people have experience of, good & bad, & sensible recommendations, not interested in iPhone or Samsung s10!

Thanks in advance for any info

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

It’s not just the Google issue with Huawei...I certainly wouldn’t want to have any private data on one, you just don’t know who is seeing it!

The Huawei issue has very little to do with actual security issues and very much to do with the protectionist agenda of the current US administration. As they say on CSI - Always follow the money.

In terms of phone cameras, I have a google pixel 3 and it takes fantastic photos, the new 3a has the same camera but is cheaper so that'd get my vote.

Hope that helps.

The Huawei ssecurity thing is more to do with network firmware and not the current mobile BUT due to Trump future models of Huawei phones will not be supported by Google Play and are likely to have Huawei's own operating system but current phones are not affected, but as the situation has affected sales there are some heavily discounted Huawei phones around.

Most two lens rear cameras are actually to improve the performance rather than an optical zoom/

Many dual lens cameras don't use lenses of different focal length but are intended produce a sharper picture particularly in low light by combining the images from a colour and black & white camera.

I used to like Samsung but wouldn't touch one now because of the heavily bloatware laden Samsung version of Android .

If you are looking for a a very good phone with good camera that dosen't cost a bomb look at the Moto G series

ZTE and Honor also makes some very decent phones at a good price.

Hmmm. Google Pixel 3 is rather more than I wanted to pay, the problem with review sites is that there is frequently simply too much information, hence why I was looking for some real life experiences of phones from peeps that have used them.

I guess the issue with optical zoom vs digital zoom is somewhat resolved with the huge no,'s of pixels used compared to how it used to be

Has anyone had any experience of One Plus or Xiaomi?

For the best reviews Pocket-Lint https://www.pocket-lint.com/phones/reviews they always have sample shots from the camera and test the cameras in various situations. They also list and rate against comparable phones. Xiaomi make decent phones.

The Moto G7 range ---- 4 different models are terriffic value I have had a few earlier Mot G and currently still use the Moto E4 Plus I bought 18 months back and love it.

Personally right now I would go for the Moto G7 Plus Vodafone are doing a very good pay monthly contract on it.

Whilst I would mostly agree with you, the later Moto's aren't as value for money as the earlier ones. I went from a G5 to an Honor 8X because the G6/G7's weren't that much of a bargain.

And I have to be blunt, I didn't really rate the Moto for taking pictures. It wasn't the picture quality, there was a horrendous delay while it thought about it. I got more people blinking or with blurred limbs than I did actual decent photos. Having a good lens for a picture is only half the story, it needs to be quick. Unless you're just doing landscapes, then go for it.

I had a few Moto g's. Cheap and ok. I keep my phone's a long time and it was showing its age (performance). Now have a OnePlus. Great phone but not in your price bracket.

I have the huawei p20 Pro and it's a great bit of kit, got it for work as needed a big screen and decent camera. Can't fault it, be interested to see how they go with future phones after the who trump Google thing.

Really put off by Motorola as my wife has a E5 which all the reviews said was better than the S4 mini she had b4 (she likes a small phone) & quite frankly it's crap, takes rubbish low quality pictures, has no flash/torch, is really, really slow & does things in a much less logical order as they've messed with the basic Android system, & yes, I know an E5 is a long way from a G7, but manufacturers do have a habit of passing stuff across a range of phones, plus what's been said about the delay in taking pics doesn't fill me with enthusiasm.

I'm now looking at the Xiaomi Mi A2, or A2 lite, I like the battery life on the A2 lite, but the camera on the A2 is far better (at least on paper) & it has a much faster processor, not that that is high on my list of priorities, but no one likes staring at a screen waiting for something to happen!

Just wondering if anyone on here owns or has experience of either, would be great to hear?

My wife has the a2 lite. Good phone but poor camera. I have a galaxy s8 which has a superb camera. I would definitely recommend it.

if you want a decent camera, then buy a camera, with a proper optics rather than pinhole,
then get a phone that is nice and small and fits in your pocket

though admittedly a lot of the phone cams are very good

Interesting....in certain sectors of the Armed Forces we were told in no uncertain terms NOT to use Huawei because of security issues.....and this was pre-Trump. The issues apply equally to commercial and personal info too...

I already have an excellent camera, however, I don't always have it with me when a good photo op arises, hence my desire for a phone with a good camera, without spending a fortune - disappointing to hear the A 2 Lite camera isn't much cop, on paper looks like it should be excellent?

Oh, well, I've bitten the bullet & ordered a Xiaomi Mi A2, princely sum of £133, was going to costs at least another £100 for a Galaxy s8 & that would have been reconditioned/SH etc.

I will report back on my findings once I've used the phone for a bit & got used to it

Incidentally someone mentioned getting a phone on contract as opposed to buying - just thought I'd throw this in for comparison.

I bought my S5 around 3 & 1/2 years ago, refurbished second hand grade A - cost £125, I'm pretty clumsy with my phones, frequently forget to take out of my pocket when working on cars etc & drop it on pretty much a weekly basis! I've had one screen replacement on the S5 at a cost of £30 & numerous gorilla glass screens at around £2 a pair, plus a soft case to try & stop me murdering yet another phone, let's say overall costs around £175, over 3 & 1/2 years that comes out at around £4 a month, add to that my Virgin contract which was originally £5, then went to £6 & recently to £7 (but now gives me 2gB data, 1000 minutes & unlimited texts, all of which is way more than I need) & that comes out at around a tenner a month in total, compare that to the best deal I could find at the time for that phone on contract which was I believe around £30 a month, or £360 a year & I reckon I've saved probably over £600, even on the basis that an S5 contract would have come down somewhat during that period

Now I understand that if you want the latest phone, tons & tons of data etc (useless to me as I'm normally within range of wifi) then that's of no interest. but if you're happy to have a decent phone & pay for it up front then it's an absolute no brainer - I would point out the S5 is still actually going strong, I just find it a little slow & it is obviously looking somewhat jaded now
