Garage Lighting

Time to replace the old twin 6' tube lighting in the garage
These are the old fat type tubes

Have 2 x 6' twins at the moment plus a few singles

What are my options and where to buy from ?

Don't mind going used/secondhand if it will help keep the cost down

Thanks

Interesting change.

At home I've been around the house and changed to low power LED bulbs. It's cost some to do, but in theory the bulbs last longer and use a lot less power to keep the leccy bills down. I've also been "instructing" the family to turn the sodding things off when they're not in the room - harder than it sounds to impart this knowledge!

In my garage I've fitted LED bulbs as well and I believe you can get LED strip light bulbs as well. May impose more initial cost, but safe in the knowledge that running costs will be lower.

I have some 500W halogen security heaters, I mean lights for winter,. bloody magic. Otherwise yes LED down lights are good

I've found these guys pretty good via their local trade counter and online.

Something else I've found very helpful in the garage is a lead light to get illumination right where you need it.

I was looking at these for my garage - LED strip lights that can be daisy chained together. Price looks OK in the grand scheme of things.

I've got 2 twin strip lights on the cieling, 2 old 800w security flood lights pointing at the car and under counter leds on the cupboards. With the heating/air con on aswell the rest of the village goes dark.

Not sure its worth going LED in a garage unless you spend a serious amount of time there. I went LED in the garage just because I'm restricted to 12v lighting (no mains) so efficiency was important. But if you've got mains I'm not sure it's worth it. We changed our fluro T8 lamps to LED at work and the break even time was a year but then they're on 10 hours per day five days a week....

Ive fitted some of these 12v leds in my garage with good results, I run them through a 240v to 12v driver, fitted 12 of them, total cost less than £50.
And they only use less than 120w total.

I've got 4 of the above in a double garage, light is amazing and pure white very good to work with. Didn't pay anything near website price as I work for revel group.

Guys on trade counter will do you a deal. Commercial spec luminary so are so much better than the normal stuff.worth the extra imo

I recently fitted a 30W led floodlight to replace a 500W halogen - gives the same light, but a much wider spread of light (so about 4 times the area is evenly lit). It cost about £40. I have 3*3w floodlights in my greenhouse (27ft by 12ft) and it is the best lit room in our house!

Just to ask the stupid question (its what I'm best at ) have you painted the walls / floor / roof in light colours first?

Its amazing how much difference it can make and how many fewer lights you can get away with

Yes I painted the walls and celing in white, floor is garage PVC tiles in mid grey, and as you say makes a bug difference

I'm now running 4x 5ft strips evenly spaced about the roof.

It's lovely.

I can't emphasise how nice it is to have light from all angles.

depending on how dry your garage is, you may want to consider waterproofed options. mine has a flat roof - metal and condensation dripping is an issue..

tho - why do you want to replace them? if they aint broke....

jacko - 9/2/16 at 06:21 PM

we fitted 4 new led strip lamp in the work shop they are a white/ blue light and bloody awful and if you look at them they leave blue rings in your eyes
i have asked the electrician to change them
