What kinds of grease should I have to hand in my garage, what jobs are they for and what quantities should I be buying..?

unless you live up a mountain I'd not stock up on too much...

A 2 or 3 of tubs of moly grease depending on your expectations. I don't even bother with plain grease tbh and just use moly on everything (bar brakes)

I find a tub of copper slip last forever as it's not all that used on cars, small tube is usually more than enough.

You'll generally be using grease on axle bearings and propshaft joints or if rebuilding the steering rack, not much else needs it





saying that moly is a great water proof every tacky underseal...

I used a small tub of Red Rubber for brakes.

I'd get a small tin of red rubber grease for rubber bits and bushes.
I'd get a tube of copper slip for 'anti sieze' things and a large tin of lithium grease for everything else.

A tube of Copper Slip lasts for a long time and doesn't go off either.

TBH I've also had a smallish tub of normal grease for quite some time too.

Castrol Multipurpose grease for general greasing (inc wheel bearings for some cars), 500 gm tub:

Copaslip.

The correct gear oil for your gearbox, including what is required for the steering rack (my Austin Healey Sprite uses EP90 GL4 for gearbox, steering rack and front upright trunnions - both the rack and trunnions have 'grease' nipples, but grease not to be used, so need another 'grease' gun to do this; I use Castrol or Comma EP90 GL4). Not sure what Escort racks need.

Some decent penetrating oil, not WD40 which is only a water dispersant - such as PlusGas or Rostoff.

If you're rebuilding an engine some engine build lube is a good idea if you're taking your time.
