car tax

it would appear joe public gets shafted again if i sell my car on the first of the month the new owner will not get the remiander of the month but i will not get a refund as the month has started how much longer must we suffer these swindlers taking the pixx this government needs to spend more time trying to get the economey on its feet and not trying to rip us off at every turn we are the people of this country government should be for us to help us all not to cheat us at every turn. I get begging e mails of the conservatives every day sick of it.

Oh, have you thought about contacting your MP instead of moaning on the internet? I believe the DVLA operates pretty independently on day to day business only receiving guidance from central government. Perhaps attend a drop session for your MP or run for local council or form a campaign group or make an FOI request to see how much money this generates or literally anything proactive?

Personally i thought Ali F27 has raised a very valid point about the new car tax rules and has invited comment on a car forum.

Can only guess Doctor Derek is having a bad day

I suspect the government is trying to get the economy back on its feet unlike the previous bunch of clueless **ckwits that left the country with a trillion pound debt as opposed to the credit it had beforehand.

If you like, they could make basic rate tax more like France at 48%. Funnily enough, we have some socialist friends who moved to France 10 years ago, and guess what - didn't like working all the time to pay for government cockups and so have moved back.

Bizarre.

Another funny thing - I agree with you that they do appear to be taking the michael with the rfl, so sell car at the end of the month

So what we are saying is the previous government is to blame for the current state of the economy not the bank collapse must be reading the wrong information somewhere never mind all we need to do is give the conservatives 5 years and they will put it right

the reality is that as an owner yes you are shafted especially if you sell mid month then buy mid mid month so you buy 2 lots.

When you buy your new car there is a 99% that as you drive it away you wont have been able to tax it as the owner details will still be with the seller so you risk being fined for driving an untaaxed vehicle

had the government allowed direct debit payments be made for monthly purchase ie 12 payments many more peoiple would probably find this more affordable than the 6 month minimum up front payment therefore increase revenue.

Changing the way you pay will not increase the numbers of people taxing vehicles as per the hype its not as though the number of Number plate recognition cameras has been increased tenfold therefore the tax dodger will still get away with it. Just the honest Joe car driver that gets humped again

The are greater ways of raising the revenue to get us out of the SH1T the governement could charge people for services the get. ie the drunk tha gets that hammered he ends up having his stomach pumped. charge him the full cost to include £400 for the ambulance call out etc

toughen up on louts if it takes 4 police to arrest you then you fine should include the cost od 4 officers a van to take you away and then your rent for the night not just a measly £80 fine and a slap on the wrist.

I am A political as I see they (political parties) all have their inherent failings we need to toughen up to what is taking the money out and make sure they hit those who take it not mr average who goes through life paying his way and keeping to the laws of the land.

I would even levy a charge of £2.50 per day for food supplied in hospital to those who are in a position to pay for it

thats my rant

Meanwhile in the real world George Osborne spectacularly fails to achieve any of his targets, the books WON'T be balanced by 2015 and the economy is still stalled. On a positive note some of his cronies will make a tidy profit on the Royal Mail shares they bought at mates rates.

They had someone on BBC Breakfast talking about this last week and when they asked if the new system meant there would essentially be an overlap (As one month would be paid twice) he said no, then restated how the system works which clearly involved the month of sale being paid for twice. The thing is it doesn't matter what day of the month it happens, either way it's being paid twice. His argument was the average motorist would some how save money because currently very few people reclaim the remaining tax, seemingly ignoring the fact that in almost every transaction the buyer is paying for that remaining tax.

It just seems stupid that we finally move to a system that doesn't involve bits of paper so the tax could reasonably start any time (The way insurance does) and we still end up with a system that works to complete calendar months. It just seems like such a missed opportunity, but then the whole non transferring tax has struck me as a bit of a con from the off, the same goes for not being able to keep uninsured cars taxed.

Totally agree ^^^^^^^ ! Don't just complain on the web, do something about it; visit your MP, write to him/her, get active !

it is unlikely locostbuilders could affect it, but you getting in your MPs face may have (but too late now !).

Tax has gotta come from somewhere!

Income, capital gains, NI, fuel, vat, mansion tax... the government have a choice- raise taxes, cut spending or borrow more.

Which would you do?

Cut spending on the NHS, schools, your granny's pension? Borrow more? Or raise taxes?

It's always annoying when it's 'us' that are paying more than when it's a group we don't belong to. But don't worry, you'll get some back when it's your pension and you're half dead on the NHS... and then it's some other bugger's turn to pay!

personally i'd rather pay more in tax if it resulted in better public services.

better off giving my money to the nhs than paying it to bupa in order to get decent care.

private provision probably is more efficient in some areas, but then the cost savings go to shareholders, so the country still loses out.

(see also 30 years of privatisations that have robbed the country of most of its assets and let most of it go abroad)

yes It is a pain but the main reason more cars will be insured because you will need that to tax the car and if it isn't the system will flag it up stops people buying a car with long mot and tax and no bothering to insure the car and driving around for a long time..a months tax is zero to approx £50 loss and in the whole scheme of things is a small price to pay if it gets more uninsured drivers off the road, believe me I know!....

^^^ it is early morning so my brain is fuzzy.

The system that knows the car is taxed surely knows the car is insured or not?

The proposal is twice the rip off it is now. There is no reason why car tax cannot start from days of purchase, probably one or two lines of Java.

I agree that the double month seems unfair but as has been pointed out its not a huge amount of money, for most of us you are talking £0 to £25 'extra' which when buying a selling a car is a tiny amount. The current figures for the cost of un-insured drivers on the rest of us is £30 per year per policy.

At the moment I could buy a car with 6 months tax and just drive it, don't need to insure it and might get away with it. With the new scheme I will HAVE to take out a new insurance policy to be able to tax the car.....that's why this system is better in that respect

For the new scheme to work it all comes down to enforcement and I would expect to see an increase in cameras checking tax disks on major roads over the next few years but if it makes my insurance cheaper in the long run then go for it

It is unfair in the sense you paid tac for days you cannot use.

How would you like it if you had to pay in tescod for two boxes of cornflakes you did not have in your trolley. Same thing in principlr.

You say now you will have to get insured to drive.

I say you could still drive without tax or insurance. In fact you could drive a car not belonging to you i,e. Stolen if you so desired.

The new system will not prevent that, the police would physically have to intervene.

Most people may sell a car with a bit of tax so they don't get a refund on it this way there get a bit of money back so it's not that bad it's no different than buying a car without tax you just need to put it in the budget if if reduces uninsured cars on the road its a big plus and you can tax on monthly direct debit so that's a + surely a?

Although it effectively a stealth tax on selling cars the main problem is entirely to with practical issues not the colour of the political party in power. However the fact that none of those who reside in Downing St have never actually had a real world job cannot help.
With the loss of the late Alan Clarke from Parliament the car fraternity lost a voice in Westminster.
These regulations just won't work , one thing that strikes me is that the rules make it practically impossible to buy a vehicle without an MOT without resorting to trailering the vehicle home. Under the old rules you could book the vehicle for MOT at a garage enroute to your home.
For practical purposes. Joe Public needs a legal way to buy car privately and get it home and not have to tax it immediately.
We already have short term insurance we need to have short term road tax, I would not object to paying £25 for a combined short term tax and insurance cover to get a vehicle home.
