Yes, I believe some aircons take readings from inside, outside, and light sensor on the dash.

I took mine into quick fit last year, only place that I could find with out booking it in. They found a leak so no charge but I was happy with the service. They got me some glasses and showed me the leak under the uv.

Kwik fit et al are a bit expensive at around £50 but do honour their cooler or you don't pay offer.

Indies can be cheaper, best round here are about £30 but if there is a problem with your system you still pay.

If the aircon is cooling a bit then it is probably a recharge, if it's not cooling at all then a bit more investigation is required.

The auto fill machines do do a leak test but just because it passes does not mean your system is leak free, it just means its not a very big leak.

Check the radiator fan comes on when you switch on the AC

Also if your car has climate control rather than simple AC then usually the ambient air sensor and a sunlight sensor are part of the system.

The climate control units BMW use (also Range Roverand Rover 75 ) have self diagnostic via pressing a button combination at start up.
