Landie Series 3 help.....

Mate of mine overseas runs the above.
He's complaining that despite fitting a "reconditioned" starter it's failing to engage until the vehicle is rocked in gear.
To me it sounds more like a worn ring gear?
Alternatively there's part of the starter's internal winding/commutator which is fooked despite being "reconditioned"?
Since I'm not familiar with Landies any thoughts/advice, known faults gratefully received.

Sounds very much like the ring gear is chewed. The damage/wear should be visible/feelable when the starter is removed.
If it has an inertia starter the wear will be on the gearbox face of the ring gear.

Four cylinder engines always come to rest in only two positions 180 degrees apart so nearly all the wear occurs on only a few teeth.
