Jeep Patriot hesitation or hopping issue

Why do I still have this car?

Anyway Jeep Patriot 2.0 TDI. One of the VW PD type engines. Six speed manual.

When accelerating gently through 2000rpm to 2800rpm it hesitates and sort of bunny hops. This is occompanied by a pfff pfff pfff pfff sound, like squirting fuel maybe. If I put my foot down through the gears it doesn't do it, so I'm thinking it's not fuel filter?

Anyone come across this on a diesel tdi?

Check your turbo hose from the intercooler to the inlet mainfold, it may have a split in it.
A new one on ebay is about 70 quid.

OK thanks will do. Is 2000rpm typically when the turbo should kick in?

Bin there done that - it's the fuel filter.

Also if you are going through track rod ends and bushes like chocolate replace with Problem Solver or Mevotec.

They only last about 15k miles,. When was it last changed?

I did it March last year, so probably 18 ish k miles ago.

Right - replaced the fuel filter today - definitely needed doing. I emptied the old diesel out, the fuel was dark blue in colour and full of particles. Good call on that - will add that to my yearly service routine instead of following Jeeps suggested 2 year interval. The car feels a lot more responsive now but still does the pfff pfff pffff and hesitates when pulling away from 2000rpm, albeit not as bad as before.

Had a feel around the intercooler hose that connects to the inlet manifold and sure enough I can feel a split on the back! I'll order one and post an update once its done.

Hi again,

New hose fitted - got one from Poland for half the price and it fixed the issue.

It wasn't too filthy in there either, only a thin layer of crud up the shudder and EGR valve. What did surprise me is the amount of oil passing through. The split had splattered a fair amount over the engine block and it was starting to drip down the hose. Looking around the back, the turbo is wet on both the inlet and outlet. This Jeep only has 60K on it. Could the seals be failing on the turbo or is this normal for a diesel?

No blue smoke coming out the back, but it does chuck out a fair amount of black when I boot it...
