MX5 - Cam locking tool

To change the cam belt on a 90 1.6 MX5 do i need a cam shaft locking tool?

Haynes manual does not describe using one but it looks like they are available.

The inlet cam wont sit where i need it to, always jumps a tooth.

There is a square section on both cams that you can use an adjustable spanner on to manipulate the cams. Bit of a bugger but it can be done.

On my 1.8 I just held the two cams in the correct place with two spanners and a pair of mole grips.

Yes... I saw this, thought it was a neat idea.

Saves £20 on a tool if it works. :-)

Worked ok for me! I did a full belt, bearing and waterpump change over the winter.

Worth changing the WP whilst you're in there as they are a common failure.
