Mk2 Difference between 1.6 and 1.8
DavidhMX5 - 10/11/18 at 04:59 PM

Hi,
Just picked up a donor MX5 for a haynes roadster. Seller said it was a 1.6 but the rocker cover is same as my lads 1.8. Any way to tell for sure which it is? If it helps at all it has the Roadster badge on the back and is a 2000 model.
Almost a shame to strip it as it has to be the most rust free MX5 I've seen.
Should also say I haven't seen the V5 so no help there.

the only difference i know is the shape of the inlet manifold, 1.6 is round and 1.8 squareish, it,s a crime to break a saveable one these days you know, plenty rust buckets out there

Thanks. 1.6 it is then.
If it helps I do feel slightly bad about breaking it but the engine is already in pieces hence the low price I paid.

at least try to sell the shell, they are an endangered species these days

Probably not a good move to show you a pic then.

The only bit I could not get rid off when I stripped the Mk2.5 - very little rust great condition - no one wanted it. Selling the rest paid for the car twice over and left me with the engine

The coil pack is on the opposite side at the back of the head. On the 1.6 its on the exhaust side, on the 1.8 it is on the intake side.
