New Velocity XT owner
matt5964 - 27/7/13 at 09:10 AM

Hello All,

I have Recently come from Bike's to my first Kit car

A Luego Velocity XT.2.0 ltr crated st170 lump

I cant seem to work out how to post up pic's?

Also I have a question regarding ground clearance as we are in and area were some roads are bumpy, we fitted a sump guard as we were not wanting to ground out the sump... good job we did as we have caught it a few times, so I have looked into a raceline sump etc.. the shallowest seem to be about 13cm in depth. However our sump on the car now is only 10cm and looks like a standard Zetec sump (again if someone can point me in the right direction I can put up some pics) we currently have 55mm ish Clarence from lowest point to ground!!

So I'm not sure weather to increase ride height, adj rebound/damping on Gaz collies, change the springs for different weight..[
Any help would be much appreciated

Greetings and welcome.

Photo's. Click on photo archive (upper left), scroll down to upload photo's (there is a maximum size but cant remember what it is) and upload to site.

When posting open new post box and write what you want then there are several methods of showing your photo in post, I usually use the method : [ img ] (copy and past image location here) [ / img ] but without the spaces within the brackets. When viewing the image within your photo archive it will also show other ways to show in posts.

I hope this helps.

Also the lowest point on a car, other than deep sumps is usually the bell housing, so try and get some form of protection for the front bottom lip edge to stop that catching too.

Welcome to LCB, another velocity owner!

Another way of posting pics is hit the yellow pic button in the buttons above (when in edit mode) then paste in the link from your archive starting http and ending JPG.....like this: -

Could be my imagination but the bell housing looks very low which makes me suspect the engine mounts might be too low. Most sumps tend to be shortened to match the bell housing

The sump shows no sign of shortening, and the guy we bought it off said the engine was as is came out of the create Looking at the engin mounts if they wee any higher then the top of the engine woul foul the nose cone neither would the bonnet fit. Am still con fused as to the sump being 10cm deep

It's a mt75 gearbox if that helps, will have to think about housing as you say

matt5964 - 28/7/13 at 06:09 PM

Anyone have any ideas ?

paulf - 28/7/13 at 08:42 PM

You could gain about 25 mm by shortening the sump if still standard and below the bell housing there is no point in shortening it below the bell housing however. Is there no room at all for raising the engine? if there is you could put a couple of spacers under the engine mounts to gain a little more.
My car is a book built chassis which I think is 25 mm lower than the Luego chassis from the bottom rails to bonnet mounting height and I have about 75 mm ground clearance and have not had any problems with bottoming out.I did have to cut a small bit out of the nose cone to clear the engine which is mounted as high as possible.

Andybarbet - 28/7/13 at 08:57 PM

If it would fail the nosecone lifting the engine, would you be able to lift the engine if it was moved backwards ?

I am wondering if the engine would then sit in the bonnet bulge. Allowing a little more ground clearance ?

I dont have engine etc in my chassis yet so cant tell you whether I will have a similar issue but im using a type 9 gearbox mated to a silvertop zetec. Standard escort one piece ali sump at the moment but will probably need to shorten it for improved ground clearance.

Maybe the mt75 brings the engine forward more than the type 9 when using the original welded gearbox mount in the velocity chassis ?

Andybarbet - 28/7/13 at 09:11 PM

Reading back your original question, you say the sump is only 10cm deep, im thinking that must be the steel part of the blacktop zetec sump ?

I think people have mentioned on here the need to still shorten the steel part & pickup pipe.

If I remember correctly the sump is in 2 parts & the top part is ali but looks like part of the engine, unlike the sump on my silvertop which is in 1 piece.

I reckon the raceline sump replaces both parts of yours so its 13cm but thats much shorter than yours if you account for both parts ?

Hope this makes sense ? If not then maybe someone could post up a picture of a standard blacktop sump so that you can compare it to yours.

Thanks I will have a look and see but don't think I can raise the engine with out a lot of bodywork chopping.

There does seem to be some room in the engine bay from first look but as you say looks like from underneath the gearbox prevents the moving back of the engine

Thanks this could be the issues, not realising the sump could be a 2 part one I will have a look when I get back tonight, I may still be on the path to getting a raceline sump...

matt5964 - 30/7/13 at 06:48 PM

Defiantly a two part sump. It will leave the front of the gearbox as the lowest point. Will take some photo's and post to see if its all as I think.

matt5964 - 13/8/13 at 06:47 PM

well I have taken the plunge and ordered a raceline sump...it arrives on Friday so all being well I will get it fitted the week after, also ordered some Yellow Stuff pads only £95 for front and rear sets.

The Momo Team 280 is now on a NRG quick release and is a lovely bit of kit 0 play and now have a locking blank for when the wheel is off or car left for added security.

matt5964 - 16/2/14 at 10:26 AM

Well, today is the start of the first real bit of work to the engine and first real span nearing I have ever done.. Engine is coming out ready for lots of upgrades now it's run in...going to get me some more ponies.

matt5964 - 16/2/14 at 07:45 PM

Engine out with no dramas, drop it off at dunnel in the morning for all the work to be done

Andybarbet - 16/2/14 at 11:54 PM

Sounds good :-)

matt5964 - 21/2/14 at 11:21 PM

Well, the head is getting ported flowed and polished, then some custom cams, competition springs retainers etc. bottom end bolts, lightened flywheel, crank pulley and balancing.
Then i have a dash2 to fit. Once run in its off to emerald for a remap and bigger injectors(not sure which ones yet, maybe let Dave suggest which to have)

Not sure if I need to do anything else at this point

rusty nuts - 22/2/14 at 02:16 PM

Hope you've booked well in advance with Emerald ,well worth the wait.

matt5964 - 22/2/14 at 03:14 PM

not booked it in yet as not got a date for the engine to return, then I will have to put 400 ish miles on it before I get it mapped.

ive heard good thing about emerald remaps

matt5964 - 4/4/14 at 06:35 AM

Finally got time to get the engine in and plumbed back up as have been waiting for parts... the relief when she fired up was immense..lol

hoping to get out on the road tonight for a test drive to see if there are any leaks and get some miles slowly on so I can book in for remap and new injectors..

Should not take long for me to put 4-600 miles on..

matt5964 - 27/4/14 at 11:45 AM

half way through engine running in and it pulls nicer than it did before and is a lot louder...

Decided to take the plunge and get a full Simpson Race exhausted made for the car...

Dash2 to be fitted still .

Thinking of the injectors would these be any good for my application?

Just need to get the wheel speed sensor working on the Dash 2

then off to emerald on 1st July for a remap

Have booked Cadwell on the 5th July and Rockingham on 18th July to test the upgrades fully.

Well we ended up with 221.3 bop and 178.9 lbft.

Really happy with the result as it is very driveable and the noise in infectious, Dave and john at emerald have done a cracking job highly recommended

mccsp - 1/7/14 at 07:02 PM

Sounds good, what was it when you first arrived at Dave's?

What intake set-up are you running?

Is it possible I have seen you in Yaxley on the Ferndale estate?

Yes we live on the Ferndale estate... Spooky are you on broadway...?

Jenvey throttle body's and 45x 90 trumpets, 320 ev16 bosch injectors and a pipercross 105mm filter

When we got it std exhaust and std injectors about 165bhp

Exhaust and ported head custom cams but still standard fuleing and 45x60 trumpets was circa 185bhp

mccsp - 1/7/14 at 07:32 PM

Hi,

I am also on Ferndale.

Thought I saw a car that may well have been yours passing the co-op a few weeks ago.

Small world.

mccsp - 3/7/14 at 08:35 PM

Good luck at Cadwell tomorrow. Have you been before? Just build up gently. Having visited the barriers at Cadwell in the past, I know how well they can bite.

matt5964 - 3/7/14 at 08:45 PM

We went to Cadwell September last year, defiantly will be building up as lest time we had half a pack of pony's less to play with. Looks like there is going to be showers so hall bends will be interesting to say the least

If you can let me know how to post vides I have a few from emerald.

matt5964 - 6/7/14 at 07:58 PM

Cadwell went really well, started off a bit dicey and very wet... Not the ideals senates to learn the car in, some rabbit nose moments. Then it cleared up, had a few issues. The clutch needed adjusting as I could not get clean gears when hot or under high load, this was fixed with adjustment of the cable and peddle . The second issue was a little more prohibiting the dash 2 went crazy and failed, look like it's not as waterproof as it should be so I had no telemetry, not ideal with the new engine spec meaning I had no idea of water temp, oil pressure or temp, no rev counter nor speed.. So had to be ginger even when the track was dry but this did not detract from a very good day, hope fully race technology will be reasonable about the situation and turn it round befor 18th July ready for rockingham.

Dave Bailey - 6/7/14 at 08:08 PM

The dash 2 failure is a bit of a concern... I have one of the very early ones.. Not been out in the wet yet...

Mine is only a couple months old, and first time out in rain.

I will let you know what they say.

I have just tried it out after keeping it in the airing cupboard over night and it seems to read ok now

well I called RT this morning and it seemed not to be a surprise to them, they are having the unit back to reseal and replace any damaged parts, only downer is that I wont have it back for at least a week so now use of the car this weekend..but it will be back ready for the 18th and Rockingham.

matt5964 - 11/7/14 at 09:19 PM

Got a call from rt will receive dash on Monday .. Rockngham is a go..

matt5964 - 19/7/14 at 08:25 AM

dash went in well, started the car and it ran a bit rough... after speaking to emerald it seems I will need to trim up the cold start a bit, once warm the car runs silky smooth.

Had a good day at Rockingham day started very wet and slippery, gave myself a big scare coming out of Tarzan big tank slapper both ways, funnily enough the 911turbo behind me was quite scared too. just before lunch things started to warm up nicely, then after lunch it went very hot and dry.

my wife and I both had a lesion in the afternoon and well it was the best £60 I have ever spent, really pleased with the confidence and understanding of the car it gave us. just need to practice more..oh well another excuse to book a track day for August.

matt5964 - 28/7/14 at 05:28 PM

We have booked a traqck day at Bedford with MSVT 16th Aug, anyone on here going??
