Which 6 pot sounds best?
Xtreme Kermit - 27/10/12 at 05:25 PM

So, continuing the 6 cylinder theme, which 6pot sounds best?

Do you prefer the traditional straight 6 or a screaming V6

That is of course assuming there is a difference... (obviously I think there is, or I wouldn't ask the question... )

twybrow - 27/10/12 at 05:36 PM

No option for flat-6? e.g. Porsche?

scutter - 27/10/12 at 05:47 PM

Alfa for me. But a little bias

ATB Dan.

theduck - 27/10/12 at 05:48 PM

Options should be

Straight 6
Offset straight six (eg Volkswagen vr6)
V6
Flat 6

The correct answer is clearly flat 6

Xtreme Kermit - 27/10/12 at 05:57 PM

Clearly I missed that off the list to provoke a fight

VW engines with a couple of extra cylinders tacked on don't count...

Xtreme Kermit - 27/10/12 at 05:59 PM

BTW, I've not one one of hese polls before. Is there a way of adding flat to the options?

rj - 27/10/12 at 05:59 PM

Metro 6R4, i remember years ago i was a Cadwell watching a stage rally, a 6R4 was blasting round, and a lass i knew said "that sounds better than sex" hit the nail on the head !
so locost collective, what are the ingredients for the 6R4 noise, i know it needs to rev to 9000/10000, and have a fairly open exhaust, suspect it is also to do with crankpin angles and the firing order

mark chandler - 27/10/12 at 06:00 PM

Straight six for me, biased I have one

britishtrident - 27/10/12 at 06:09 PM

Straight 6 anything else is the work of the devil.

rdodger - 27/10/12 at 06:15 PM

KV6 sounds very good

Wow, I was going, straight as a favourite and then V, but that sounded awesome... I may be swayed to the dark side after all...

That engine sound is not a million miles from the sound of my Mx5 - I'll see if I can get some video !

Oh , and by the way - V6 all the way (yep , I'm a bit biased......)

jacko - 27/10/12 at 07:50 PM

Skyline straight 6 for me
Jacko

Fatgadget - 27/10/12 at 07:54 PM

Jag XJ6.

Anyone know what it sounds like?

big_wasa - 27/10/12 at 07:58 PM

Just sold a 2.5 kv6. On song with a cai and decat it sounded awsome......

Smooth, go to Goodwood revival and you see plenty of straight sixes on song

richardR1 - 27/10/12 at 09:11 PM

Straight six for me, again rather biased as I am addicted to the scream of my GTR all the way to 9k plus. The massive flames and bangs on every gearchange help too.

Chippy - 27/10/12 at 10:24 PM

While having a V6, and love the sound, for pure ear candy you just cant beat a straight six on song. IMHO Ray

Got to agree with you there. Even though I've got the newer version with the VR38, the RB26 takes some beating for pure music to the ears

maccmike - 28/10/12 at 12:18 AM

flat

DanP - 28/10/12 at 07:14 AM

BMW straight six... No question.

An ///M engine wide open sounds beatiful, even a 2litre sounds like a lion roaring in a biscuit-tin!

V6 noise is just a V8 noise that's missing something...

Edit... Flat six is nice too, current car is a 911 turbo but the turbo squishes the noise somewhat.

Btw have owned Audi 2.6 v6, rover 3.5 v8, ford 4.9 v8, Chevy 5.7 v8, BMW 2.0 I6, BMW 3.2 M I6, Porsche turbo flat 6. I6 is the best sounding six.

six mad - 28/10/12 at 08:10 AM

Most 6 cylinder engines sound good even my 6 cylinder diesel sounds ok.

But if i had to pick a couple M3 CSL or tuned skyline or supra engines sound sublime

V6 - enough said .....

Ivan - 28/10/12 at 08:57 AM

I go with straight six - although that Subi flat six video goes a long way towards changing my mind.

six mad - 28/10/12 at 04:48 PM

This makes some very nice noises

gallons perminute - 28/10/12 at 11:07 PM

I have engineered a few 6 cylinder cars in my time. BMW M3 with BMW Motorsport exhaust system was good but Venturi LM600 did it for for me. It was sooooooooooooooooooloud you could not hear it up close. Renault V6, twin turbos and it had megaphone exhausts fitted. No silencers. Awesome.

NigeEss - 29/10/12 at 12:06 AM

Straight 6.
Austin Healey 3000.
End of discussion.

TheGiantTribble - 29/10/12 at 08:10 AM

Straight 6 for me
Either Jag D
or Triumph
with three Webber Carb....Ooooo starting to dribble now

mcerd1 - 29/10/12 at 09:59 AM

V6 every time - even my 3.0 scimitar sound the dogs and its a heap of scrap (at the moment anyway...)

rev's about 7000 - 9000rpm depending on the spec

90° between the cylinders

flat plane crank (I think?)

oversquare bore/stroke

quad cam with 4 valves per cylinder

+ individual throttle bodies on top spec ones

=

r1_pete - 29/10/12 at 12:36 PM

Straight 6 for me, but I too am a little biased...

Good effort! You're going to have to post a vid of that when it's installed.

ettore bugatti - 2/11/12 at 06:32 PM

Can I throw this into the mix?

MikeRJ - 2/11/12 at 07:27 PM

You only have to listen to a 6R4 at full chat to know there is only one true answer to this question

Whilst I originally I said 6R4, ali f27's comments make me think of a a Stratos in the middle of a forest in West Wales at 3 a.m. .....!

ali f27 - 3/11/12 at 12:12 PM

I love 6r4 have even driven one but my memories are the same kielder in middle of night listening to a stratos for 3/4 miles in the woods unbelivable

Why does it have the comedy exhausts protruding a good foot past the bumper? Sounds a little rough to me if I'm honest, it has a certain Beetle-esque rasp on the overrun which is never a good thing.

Spine tingling heard my first competing on the RAC when I was about 8 (not me silly the Stratos) that sound has never left me to this day 40 years later

EPIC

Dalby Woodyard probably the same year (mid 80s) goosebumps

zilspeed - 4/11/12 at 09:57 AM

The best 6 cylinder noise you'll hear is the one you're hearing at any given time.

Let's be honest, you don't hear enough of them and they all sound good.
Even an Audi V6 TDI sounds good compared to a 4 pot.
(Although a BMW S13 at full bore or a BDA etc.)

Nothing like as good as a Stratos, M3 CSL, 6R4, Mazda KL at 9000rpm, but they all sound good.

For dullest engine note, I vote for.

TVR AJP8, the one with the flat plane crank. Sounds like a 4 cylinder.
Current F2 car with turbo Renault engine. Sounds like about 3500rpm boucing off the limiter.

This is why they must get it right for F1 in 2014.

ss1turbo - 4/11/12 at 02:03 PM

Straight 6 for me...be it BMW, Jag, Jeep or Ford (owned or driven - and they sound even better from outside). Something about the turbine-esque smoothness.

"Odd angle" V6's have a certain note to them though - 6R4 Metro, XJ220 (same basic lump), PRV V6 (Renault, Volvo, DeLorean).

V8's don't do it for me, I'm afraid. Always sound like they're missfiring if that makes sense? Know what you mean about the flat plane TVR lump though - a Pinto sounds better!

Mr C - 4/11/12 at 03:54 PM

This one will sound the best (imo of course ) had a viewing and finalised the deal this afternoon. Quite excited about this one.

mcerd1 - 7/11/12 at 10:46 AM

here's a nice sounding one for you

scudderfish - 7/11/12 at 02:16 PM

None, you're missing 2 cylinders

chillis - 7/11/12 at 05:26 PM

To my mind none, if you want a good sound then it can only be a V8. As the yanks say six in a row just dont go!

thats its first start after 15 years in a field - it was a total heap of scrap....

it stalled if the revs dropped below 2000, whish is interesting to drive on gravel with an autobox
