Colour Change

Looking for some advice here guys,

Im installing a roll cage in my zero over the winter as the car sees more track days and events than Sunday drives these days, but as i will need to remove the majority of the body work to get in to weld i have been considering having the panels painted while they're off.

When i built the car i had a taste for orange and ordered all orange GRP panels and ally body but with the winter refresh under way i am thinking about going a nice all over grey colour.

My main concern is if i paint the now orange GRP with grey and pick up stone chips from the track after a few sessions the car could end up looking a mess with the orange under coat showing through.

Im torn between just purchasing new GRP panels in white or black and leaving the ally body, getting the full paint job (Quoted £900) or just leaving as is and ignore it and concentrate on the track.

Any have any experience from there own cars good or bad & is £900 a reasonable quote for a panel off respray?

Thanks in advance

Andy

Worth considering a wrap instead?

As above, wrap will be much harder wearing than paint too.

Had mine wrapped in a matte wrap to hide the crap fibreglass, works a treat

I contacted a local wrapping guy near me a few months ago but he said he would not do it and advised against it saying the heat from exhaust would deform the wrap, has anyone had that issue? Perhaps he was just politely saying he doesn't want the work. What sort of price is wrapping compared to paint?

Which part of exhaust?

I'm running a turbo on mine now and the wrap on my side panel gets hot and is fine.

Where do you live?

Be fine unless it's running within a couple of mm from the panels.

Lad who did mine is from Leeds, got his own business now.
He is a 3M trained/qualified fitter, mine was the first kit car he had ever done so not sure what he would charge now tbh.
The 3M vinyl cost was £450 .
He came out and did mine in my garage, all done in one day

The painter has said he will remove the gel coat, use a black primer and paint grey over the top. This way if there are any stone chips they will eb black and not the original orange that the car currently is.

The amount of stones/mud/crap off road that peppers the rear arches I wouldn't have one painted tbh.

I would be gutted paying out for a nice paint job then seeing the state of the rear arches after a few good drives

i have got carbon arches on the rear but that’s the only down side
to the candy paint, is the chips because if it gets bad then you have to
have the complete car painted again as it’s hard to touch up candy’s,
iv heard!!

What about plastidip? Cheaper than a wrap, you can remove it if you don't like it, and it's apparently pretty easy to touch up as you can just 'reflow' the coating with thinners.

Generally a matt finish but they do glossifier too. I'm going to have a play over the winter with my wings, which I did cellulose but they got battered with stone chips.

Loads of youtube videos, just search plastidip.

A friend of mine had plasti dip and i wasn't a big fan of it, having said that i suppose it comes down to the experience of the installer.

I have contacted 5 different wrapping companies so far in my area but im struggling to get any price of them, 2 turning the job down and the rest yet to come back with a price. Its very frustrating.

So the only input i have so far is from the painter who wants to remove the gel coat, black primer the car then finnish in a dark grey or nardo grey base colour.

My concern is the stone chips to the rear arch but i wonder how effective the stone chip guards are if i fit some that go rather high up the arch.

As you've already found out its hard to get companies to quote a price as they probably have never done a seven shape car before!
Jon has done two at least, mine and a m8''s Westfield

Leeds you say? That’s almost on my doorstep. I may get mine wrapped. Until I remake the panels in CF of course. Then I’ll have to get a DVLA registered colour change to black

I can't think that removing the gel coat would work too well.

You sometimes get voids between the the gel coat and fibreglass layer (corners etc) and there's potential for air bubbles. There's also the chance of fibres coming through. I'd imagine the panels would need a skim of filler.

I've got wrap on the bonnet of my track car and it has been pretty durable, it sounds like the way to go to me.
