Phone holder

I want to mount a phone holder just below the dash so I can use the sat nav functions when I'm out and about.
I was going to buy a Brodit specific holder for my Sony Z3 and make a bracket until I realised that the phone won't fit with a case in it.
So I'm thinking of a more generic holder but there are so many to choose from and I'm guessing that many on eBay will be a bit hopeless.
Any recommendations of a good holder that will stand up to a spirited road drive?
Cheers

I did not use mine much as a navi because i need data, hard when in the middle of nowhere.

When data logging though and general driving (mp3) i used velcro on the back of a cheap cover. Velcro to the top of the transmission tunnel.

I use a rubber band and strap my S4 onto my left leg, above the knee.. Plug in the charger and headphone and I'm off. Everything stays put ok. I am about to modify one of those armband phone holders to do the same thing. Even in my tintop I put a rubber band around the phone and holder as I dont trust the holder too much, as it sometimes lets go of the phone.

Some of the reviews on Amazon are a bit worrying. Saying that the legs snap off after a few months
