How to know if it's CAT D?

Hi all,

I don't know how to know if a car is cat D or not.
Is there something on the V5?

How could I know it?

Thanks

DVLA on .gov use the registration to search

It must be declared by the seller or you have recourse in law
Don't sign the sold as seen declaration

It will say at the bottom of the first page of the V5, normally it will say something like declared new at first registration. If it's been recorded written or in the past it will state it there.

CAT-D isn't declared on the V5, I'm just looking at the one from my 370Z and it's not mentioned anywhere. It shows up on the HPI check.

That's odd I've had 2 cat D's and they where both recorded on the V5!

Cat D was on the front page of a V5 of a car I bought last year - the seller hadn't mentioned it!

A motor trader must tell you if the car is a cat d or other the law states that. A private seller does not need to disclose it . So HPI is your friend if your looking to buy

To be honest I don't think you'll ever know for sure. When my 200sx was smacked from behind in a multi car pile up, whoevers insurance company was unlucky enough to pick up the bill just sent an assessor out, was deemed not economically viable to repair, and sent me a cheque for £7k. The car, keys nor logbook ever left my house, so in theory I could have bodged it back and sold it on completely unrecorded. I chose to get the gas axe out and build my striker out of it instead tho!!

If you were to write an auto trader advert out and input your reg I'm sure it brings up that it's a cat d

Maybe it's my car then?! Weird.

No, actually I've just been searching. Looks like Cat D is not recorded on the V5, only CAT C which requires a VIC.

Still doesn't explain why is not noted on mine. And neither suggest it will be on the v5. Also the abi link suggests VIC still exists?

It's really strange.

As buyer, what should I check if I don't trust the seller?

Can be a car CAT D in 2002 been cleared from that status some year later?
From my understanding yes, but I still don't have a clear idea on how know that.
