Right price for a Fury V8?
Alez - 10/3/07 at 01:01 PM

Hi All,

I'm considering buying what looks like a well sorted Fury Rover V8:
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/133018.htm

I'd appreciate any comments on this buy, specially it would be great to have your input with regards to its asking price. Not long ago, there was a similar one for sale, now sold:
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/132773.htm

What do you think? Right price? Looks like a nice car generally, worth to go see it? (Remember I'm in Spain!)

Any alternatives around that you may have seen lately? Where can I look for similar cars, other than PH?

Thanks a lot guys.

Cheers,

Alex

Looks really nicely built from a mechanical perspective.

Only thing that puts me off is the dash looks like an afterthought, but that's sortable pretty easily

Price? Looks about right to me...

Alez - 10/3/07 at 02:20 PM

Thank you very much!!

Btw, correct me if I'm wrong:

Stylus: boot, doors
Fury: no boot, doors optional
Phoenix: no boot or doors

Right?

Cheers,

Alex

I don't think it is quite as clear cut as that. My Fury has a boot for example:

Thanks!

Looks nice and it's good news for me.

The Phoenix chassis is narrower than the Fury (not sure on Stylus), and although the bodywork of the Fury and Phoenix looks similar at first glance, it has quite a few differences, a completely different rear end for example.

Alez - my mate is looking to sell his just sprayed and on the road (fully registered) Stylus with a 'Real Steel' Rover V8 engine and no expenses spared. Built by an engineer in the trade with over £12k of trade price parts.

Thanks Chris!

"The [Stylus] car was wider than the Fury in the cockpit area giving the occupants more room and also had larger doors making getting in and out a bit easier."

The car looks fantastic but I need a 25+ year old reg (age related) this time or I won't be able to register it in Spain, shame really as the car looks very nice from what I can see in the pics. Is there a spec available somewhere anyway?

Thanks!

Jasper - 10/3/07 at 05:33 PM

Not yet - as he's only considering selling.... I can get you one if you need it though.

Yup. Fury "boot" is a shelf behind the seats underneath the rear deck. About 6" tall and the size of the deck.

Jonathan,

I think only a couple of owners have made this modification...it's certainly not standard from the factory.

Stephen

PS Is that one of Steve Wiseman's old cars?

brycheiniog - 10/3/07 at 06:06 PM

Yeah it is one of Steve's old cars. The photo I posted was taken when it was still in his possession and was being thrashed around Italy.

I believe that the boot was done by the Factory as it started life as a demonstrator. When Steve collected his first Striker kit , JP told him that he was building his Fury with a boot and a glove box. We think that that was what is now my Fury .

No. Martin @ The KCW was somewhat surprised when he first saw it...

Hey, then it has "something" as standard after all, nice then.. I've been carrying my stuff from here to there for 3 years now whenever I park just like a bike driver and fancy something a bit more refined now.. I can't leave stuff inside the car where people would see it, in Madrid the car would get broken into.

Any other opinions on the ad I posted earlier on or others you may know of? Actually I would also consider a Duratec or a 4age job but can't find any.

Cheers,

Alex

Thats what I thought too, ive not looked closely at a Stylus to know the differences though

Jasper - 10/3/07 at 07:29 PM

Could be right - thought he said Stylus but his last car was - maybe I just presumed this was - does look like a Fury though.....

<anorak mode>

a) Stylus Deeper doors = shallower sills. These are still quite deep

b) Headlights. These are Std Lucus 7in not porsche....

c) Bonnet looks like classic fury. No sign of Stylus "escape hatch"

Sure there's more but I've had too much beer...

Q: Where do the regs sit on Q plates? Know of a 1996 BEC Fury that may be for sale shortly....

Alez - 11/3/07 at 08:54 AM

Hey Steve,

Not sure what you mean by where do the regs sit on Q plates (I know nothing about UK regs really to be honest) but if you mentioned the Fury BEC as a possible choice for me, I've decided to go car engined this time for a comfy frequent driver with good torque..

Thanks a lot guys.

ChrisGamlin - 11/3/07 at 11:37 AM

What Steve meant was, is it possible for you to import a Q plate car to Spain or does it have to have an age related plate thats older than 25 years?

Q plate is what a lot of kit cars get issued as they are of indeterminate age, ie engine and its major components didnt all come from a single donor and/or aren't brand new.

Alez - 11/3/07 at 04:08 PM

Cheers Chris.

Here we don't have a Q equivalent or a friendly law for cars that differ from "original" in any way. Kit cars don't exist. If it was a 25+ year registered car where the registered make and model would be something totally unusual in Spain, they will think it's an old unmodified car as long as the V5 doesn't say it's a Ford Cortina, and so I would get tax exemption but much more important is that the inspection for approval of such cars is reasonable (the one for newer cars is plain impossible to get through and the one for cars that have been modified in any way is very tricky as well).

I just took the little Fireblade Locost for a blast this morning just before I sell it (likely next week), it's such a brilliant and addictive car.. so much that I think I'm considering BEC as an option.. AGAIN!! Can't help it, it's just mental to drive these things to 12k rpm, I love it!!

I'm confused and I don't know what to do!!

[Edited on 11/3/07 by Alez]

Alez - 11/3/07 at 04:35 PM

In case you are wondering how did I manage to get my Locost (actually a Q) registered in Spain, that's because I was exempt from approval because I proved I was relocating from the UK to Spain by the time.. but now it's a different story and I need to plan carefully or I may end up with a car not worth it to get through approval because of the amount of mods needed to comply with current regulations.

In case you are wondering why on earth I'm selling the car to probably buy another BEC, it's because I want a Fury since that will be my only car so it has to have doors and convenient weather protection.

Only I'm so confused about engine choice. I fancy something with enough torque to not think too much about the clutch when going uphill from stopped (to give an example of the most typical nighmare in a BEC). But then I like the high rpms and the clutchless upshifts sooo much. Furybusa? Maybe even the R1 has comfortable torque for this kind of frequent driver? Or will I be happier if I forget the BEC madness altogether and get more reasonable, given the application?

I think I'm taking the car for another blast to find out, can't help it and the weather is brilliant at the moment!!

Cheers,

Alex

ON THE QUESTION OF THE FURY V8, I WAS CONSIDERING BUILDING ONE FROM KIT BUT AFTER VISITING KCW, WHERE THEY HAPPENED TO BE BUILDING ONE FOR A CUSTOMER, I FOUND BECAUSE THE BULK HEAD HAD TO BE MOVED BACK TO GIVE CLEARANCE, I COULD NOT GET ENOUGH ROOM TO DRIVE IT! BUT THEN I,M A FAT B******D (APPROX 95 KG AND 6FT, JUST SOMETHING TO CONSIDER, BEST OF LUCK,(I FINISHED UP BUILDING A VIENTO)

ChrisGamlin - 11/3/07 at 09:33 PM

Wow, most strange that KCW were happening to be building a Fury

Alez - 12/3/07 at 02:05 PM

From the seller:

Weight c 700kg (A heavy fury)
Power c 270 - 280bhp

What do you think? Is that the weight you would expect for a car like this or is it particularly heavy for what it is? I thought a Rover V8 would come lighter.

Cheers,

Alex

Jasper - 12/3/07 at 03:53 PM

Alez - I won't worry about the weight - not with that power
