Painting over dark stain?
coozer - 23/5/15 at 09:28 PM

So err indoors, nowt to do with me in the garage btw, wants all the woodwork doing white...

Its 15 years side we moved here staining all the woodwork a dark oak... Seemed sensible at the time...

Questions is, how easy is it? I'm tempted to get the decorator's in but needing the cash for my turbo engine built, v8 rebuild and holidays I real want to do it on the cheap...

The woodwork is not varnished just stained and I've been looking at the stuff screwfix sell which says 'stain cover and primer' does it mean colour stain or dirty old man stains? Non of them here really...

Is it really as simple as a soap wash, rub down and a stain cover primer??

few coats of primer then a couple of top coats should sort it

Yeah easy. Just make sure you remove any wax too. I scraped an entire wardrobe with a Stanley knife blade, then painted it. Still looks new after 4 years.

More or less, yes as long as there is no reaction between the stain and primer. I would not use water based paint for this job. Primer coat, two coats of undercoat and gloss. Gloss paint is semi transparent, it's the undercoat that covers well and show's the whiteness. If it looks patchy apply another undercoat before glossing.

I would use this primer:

http://www.zinsseruk.com/product/b-i-n/ or Bulls eye 1-2-3

Superb for this type of problem.

Cheers, yes I was looking at the zinessers range, downloaded the PDF spec and it says for all its products not recommended for woodstain...

But, screwfix have it in so will givce it a go....

Another for the Zinsser primer, my brother's in the trade and recommended it to me for some recent work I was doing seals and sticks to anything just give it a very light rub down between coats to knock off any "nibs" Worth paying the extra for.

as above really, we hit ours with two coats of primer and two of top coat looks fine
