Wifes pups

My dear wife has decided she would like a dog, so we have been looking and I have noticed a few adds where both parents are KC registered but the pup isn't as we want it to be a family pet. Am I being a bit suspicious at this and that may both parents may not be KC registered as it isn't expensive to register the pups when they are born.

All you have to do is ask for proof when viewing pups.

I'd suggest going to RSPCA first and seeing if they have any rescue puppy's before lining the pockets of breeders.

Sometimes when they are a well known pedigree with long family lines people don't want people breeding the pups watering down the blood line. Our cocker spaniel was from a cruffs winning bloodline but they wouldn't register her under that blood line because we could then breed her (not that we would of ever done that anyway)

Out of interest what sort of dogs are you looking at?
Just asking as it came up on our friends FB that our dog's sister is due pups any day.
They're Vizla x German Wire Pointers in North East. They're not breeders as such, just dog daft, basically doing it for friends etc and don't charge silly money either. I've had dogs all my life and Baxter's been the best by a country mile, very active though need loads of exercise.

As has said I don't think it is uncommon. When we got our dog there was a clause in the sale contract that he couldn't breed. Not sure how we would communicate that to the dog!

IMHO the best dogs / pups are mongrels and the best ones to adopt are from rescues....just my 2 p,s worth

I totally agree with Ben and Conrod there are so many pups/dogs in kennels that need a loving home and a second chance, we have four at home three are rescues.

Agreed - check the option of re-homing a dog first. My parents have had 4 dogs for many years and 3 of the current 4 are rescue dogs. For me there's quite a good feeling in doing a good turn for a dog (or other animal) that may have fallen on hard times.

Kennel club will only register puppies from a certain number of litters per bitch. I have met breeders who will continue to breed a bitch past this number of litters and then just sell the puppies unregistered.

We are looking at miniature dachshund and they are know to have some health issues that is why the back ground is important as this shows when they are clear from some. I agree that there are lots of rescue dogs but she wants one from a puppy so that is the route we will be going. It was the issue with both parents Being KC registered and the pups not I found odd making me wonder if the the 2 parents were in fact the parents, and then why were they deciding if you were going to be able to allow your dog to have pups. What Ben said does make sense with regards to the blood line but still find it strange they wouldn't register the pups, some of the pups we have looked at that haven't been registered are just as expensive as KC registered pups. We aren't buying the dog to be breed but not saying further down the line we may have a litter of pups from her.

Strongly agree & further, many breeds are now having enormous problems due to the specialist breeding for particular traits - I would highlight any of the fashionable snub nosed dogs like boxers & French Bulldogs as being classic examples of this!

My son is a vet & he tells me horrendous stories about the problems some owners & their animals are facing, & insurance companies are putting premiums for specific breeds thro' the roof for exactly this reason

I had a black and tan, long hair mini dachs (Spike). I got him as a companion dog for my dobermann (Jasper) and they were great mates right from the start. He was healthy right from the start but became epileptic at 4 years old. He would have a 'fit' for a minute or so but this very rarely happen. I lost Spike quite suddenly at the age of 10, which I always reckon on being an average life span for dogs, Jasper went at 13. I also had a rescued Dobermann bitch who went on to 16.

Since then I resolved to have a rescue dog where possible and found one on the internet who is a Dobermann but only half size. The rest of the litter were normal size and were sold, but Rex was rejected and destined to be 'put down'. I contacted the kennel and they agreed to me having him, that was 8 years ago and there are no regrets.

If you get a Dachs, they don't eat much so consider a pair. They are much happier that way.

Rescue dog for me every time, shelters are full of healthy, loving dogs. Plus there are not many things more rewarding than to rescue a dog from being put to sleep or from a life of misery.

Thought I would follow up and show the little pup we got just over a month ago and what a character he is, had to travel to a fur flug place to get him Swansea which if you live in Wales that's not to bad but I'm just outside edinburgh so that was one very long day.

Glad you got sorted, he looks lovely. Brings back fond memories for me. I got my mini dachs from Llangadog, about 30 odd miles north of Swansea, but I live in Bristol so much easier. Spike was the long hair variety, so a bit of a 'hippy'!

He was companion to my Doberman Jasper and they were inseparable, together for 10 years.

I don't think he meant it literally - only that the pronunciation is similar.

Llan in Welsh is 'church' (or more specifically the enclosure around a church... 'churchyard' or 'holy place' might be the best translation).

Llangadog translates to 'the church place of the two saints'. Nothing to do with dachshunds, sadly, despite the homonymic appeal of the idea.
