Water softener

Evening everyone.

We have a water softener in our money pit, but recently after a power cut the thing gas stopped softening!

I know nothing about it or how it works. Does anyone know about them or gave one themselves? It's connected to a manual clock driven timer that seems to be set for 2am. Not too sure this was on the right time or working but on advancing it manually tonight it's come on and gone off. All it seemed to do was flush out waste water but that's probably my lack of knowledge!

Any help please?

I hate water softeners. Copper pipe needs limescale to prevent corrosion. I've seen many failures of pipework due to this

Sorry

I know nothing about water softened, but have learned something today with piping needing lime scale, every day is a school day.
