Wiring for New En-Suite - Advice Please
We’re building a small extension part of which will become an en-suite.
Electrically there will be just a centrally mounted light and a wall mounted extractor fan which we would like although because there is an opening
window I'm not sure is actually a building regulation requirement.
The concern is that the lighting in the property isn't earthed as it was installed in the late 1960’s when the bungalow was built.
In the last year, but before we bought it, the consumer unit was replaced and an installation certificate issued which commented that CPC was not
present at all lighting points and where these had metal fittings they should be replaced with plastic or CPC installed.
The builder seems to think that his electrician will not be able to sign off the new installation unless the earthing is corrected throughout the
property.
Is this correct or could the live and neutral supplies be connected to the existing lighting circuit and a new earth run from a junction box above the
ceiling to either the consumer unit or even a convenient socket outlet. For that matter could it all be a fused spur off the ring main?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
John.

Whilst it is a really good idea to update your lighting circuits to make them a safe as possible, the IEE regulations are not retrospective or even a
statutory document.
So you could wire a new lighting circuit taken from direct to the consumer unit and earthed correctly leaving existing well alone, electrician would
then only sign off the new circuit.
As said get your existing lighting sorted asap.
Duratec Engine is fitted, MS2 Extra V3 is assembled and tested, engine running, car now built. IVA passed 26/02/2016
