strimmer electric motor prob

Ryobi RLT 3725

Tried to use it after 7+ years standing and ran fine for 30 sec but now motor is running much slower and smelling. Took cover off and looks ok but the lamination that form the motor are very hot.

Usually there is a capacitor to shift the phase, wondering if this has blown,? ... if that is the case i need to locate it, guessing it may be in the handle where the switch is.

Any ideas?

... update: capacitor is in the handle by mains switch. Place your bets on it being bad.

It's surprising that an electric strimmer would use a synchronous motor, I'd have thought they'd all use universal (i.e. brushed) motors?

You sure the capacitor next to the switch isn't simply for EMI suppression?

Hmmm, last 2 lawnmowers i fixed had them but this one is a lot smaller so it probably doesnt. Only capacitor ive found is suppresser, i reckon motor windings have failed.

Definitely not just tight bearings caused by corrosion etc?
