Hi from Fife, Scotland

Hi, got half of the way through a locost build some 20 years ago (I remember sourcing a cortina easily!).

Now feel the need to do it again (but complete it this time). I'm lucky in that I have a large workshop so plenty of room for build / donor strip down. Wanting a weekend runaround, not for racing.

My only want is that I would like sub 5s 0-60, closer to 4s would be good (and wishbone suspension). Unlike 20 years ago this one has a bit more cash to spend on it.

Plan so far, build long wide chassis based on Jim McSorley's plans. Pick up donor LHD Sierra saloon (plenty available on the continent). Will pick up the RHD bits needed of the interweb.

Engine, not sure, but quite like Vauxhall and have seen some turbocharged 2 litre installs that look good. Where else can I get 250+bhp? Would like it from a RWD car for easily installation of engine gearbox. Don't have any issues with modifying prop or drive shafts.

Can a Sierra diff take 250bhp?
Seems like an abundance of big engine Jaguars, are these good engine and gearboxes? Or are they heavy?

Anyway looking forward to getting started and plan to document the build.

Mx5. Turbo or supercharger. Cheap as chips and loads of info out there.

2.0 ecoboost mated to a mk3 mx5 box. 252 bhp standard.

Jag s type 3.0 v6?

BMW straight six of some type?

Not much choice for 250bhp standard without a bit of boost

Hi, not fancy a midi? Plenty of fwd turbo motors about. Plenty of space in the cabin as well due to very small tunnel.

Have you seen the Midlana???

Take a drive over the bridge to East Fortune and chat to Andy at the Scottish Kit Car Center

You dont really need 250bhp for sub 5 seconds but you will have a laugh with that.

Andy has his demonstrator on the road with a Big bang R1 engine in it which I am sure he would take you out in.

Take a look at the Turbo Duratec they are building right now.

Am sure you will come back with more ideas.

Have now!!!, I do like the look of that.

Appears to be a easier build as uses engine/gearbox as is (which is appealing as despite having vast electrical/mechanical/engineering experience, I've never worked with car engines/gearboxes). Plenty room up front for steering rack etc.

Are there and disadvantages against the seven style cars?

Thanks hkp57,

Took a drive over there this morning and met Andy & Michael. Great guys and got a load of information.

I have decided on the 442E chassis by Jim McSorley and the 1.6 Ecoboost engine (good for 230bhp with necessary aftermarket ECU).

So to get me started I need to source a sierra as donor, buy decent gas MIG welder and materials for the frame.

Anyone got any pointers on the best place to pick up steel stock in Fife/Tayside?

although i havent used them thistle steel in lochgelly part of purvis supply the stock car guys.
there is another in stirling that delivers and metal supermarkets in livingston.
there was one in randolph ind est kirkcaldy not sure if they are still there.

Just to give you a bit of info regarding the ecoboost.

The 2.0 is being promoted by ford and they produce a controls pack for it including ecu, loom, fuse box and fly by wire pedal for around 1500 quid and it's plug and play ready mapped. Cheaper at 1100 ish if you can get someone who's holidaying in the states to bring one back. There are a couple of tuners now starting to offer ecus but they are pricey. Sbd are one but you'll not get much change from 2k as the mapping is very complicated with the direct injection and high pressure fuel control.

The mk3 mx5 box bolts up directly to the 2.0 whereas you'll need a sigma bellhousing and a reinforced upgraded type 9 gearbox which will be around 1500 quid. My mx5 box cost 200 quid for a low miler.

There is a guy got a 1.6 in a Westfield running if you search on the wscc site.

Only problem with the 2.0 it is a pretty big lump although on a par with the likes of the f20c Honda engine and a few kilos lighter even with the turbo.

The 1.6 engines are cheaper though. Although I managed to get a 2014 2.0 with a handful of miles for 1700 complete with turbo, ancillaries and loom. And I made back 150 quid selling the flywheel, clutch, ac pump and starter.

Just some food for thought.

Or if your budget allows, power torque will do you a brand new crate 2.0 ecoboost with everything to make it run Inc plumbing, ecu intercooler etc for 4500 plus the dreaded!!

That is great info, I'm building a 442E chassis so will be plenty of room for the 2.0 Ecoboost.

It was suggested the 2.0 was a bit excessive, but sounds essier to install. How easy to source a mx5 mk3 gearbox?

Loads on eBay and at the mx5 specialist breakers. Mine was from a 2008 with 44k for 200 quid.

Yes that's the crux. It's bigger marginally heavier and a bit excessive for a 7 but it's easier to marry to a readily available box and you can get a Ford developed ecu off the shelf from powertorque in the UK or various yank tuners.

One other thing to factor in is a clutch to take the power. But suppose that would be the case for either the 1.6 or 2.0. I've found a couple of options from competition clutch and action clutch. Circa 300 all in for info.

Other little snippet of info if you go 2.0 you will need a mx5 flywheel and starter. I got mine used for 50 quid for both and another tenner to get the flywheel skimmed.

I get my chassis in 2 weeks or so and will be building soon after so if there's any info you need just shout.

I quite fancy putting the 1.6 Eco boost in my J15. The cost is obviously the issue. Not as big a lump as the 2.0 so might be easier to crowbar in.

Some info in this thread. Your looking at 1500+ for an ecu with Base map for the 1.6 plus final mapping.

Not even started and hit upon a stumbling block.

Been round the scrappies and they laughed when I asked if they had any sierras, I have been told the local (extensive) stock car racing crowd will get any that become available in a 150 mile radius :-(.

Have I got blinkers on in that I'm wanting a sierra as a donor? I see them selling for £1200+ on ebay, gumtree etc.

BMW 2.5Ti compact or Z3 any good as donors?
