Hi,

I am still deciding on a suitable engine, can anyone give me some info. on a Zetec option: like suitable gearbox. 1.4 or 2.0 liters, hight, type of carb or stick with injection, good source etc.

The Zetec appears to be a good option as they are reasonably light, common (good for spares), easily tunable etc. The type 9 or MT75 gearbox will fit almost like a glove. As for the injection you will struggle to make the stangard injection system fit due to the size of the intake chamber. There are three real options either fit carbs, fit throttle boddies or make your own intake chamber and use the orginal injection parts and keep the ecu. Loads of infomation already on this forum just search for zetec.

As said using Zetec no more tricky to mate to a RWD gearbox than Pinto. Cost is getting ingnition and fuel sorted. ECU and carbs start at about £900 for new parts, less if s/h. Injection depends on what you want but throttle bodies which is best solution come out about £1500 new. Look for a pre 95 2ltr. loads to choose from in breakers but try and find one in a runner and have a listen, cost s/h start at £350 ish for a good one.

why look for a pre 95 zetec????

Its probably because it will be subject to less stringent emission requirements.

Correct, at the moment pre 95 (not sure of the month in 95 when cut off is) engines will get thru the SVA without a cat and running on carbs, same emissions test as for Pinto/Crossflow/Vx XE. Some people try and tell you that the engine needs to be a pre '92 but this was not the case when I took my test a few months ago, they're trying to sell you injection and a cat!

The rules say that a car fitted with a engine post "92 but pre"95 has to be tested to the levels listed in the MOT manual. When the tester checks for a MK/Luego/Locost whatever it is surprise surprise not listed so he has to test to the less strict emissions level which can be passed without a cat and on carbs. If you saw a "race car is born" on Sky he was running a Zetec on carbs.

It's 1st August '95 and it's the manufactured date which is not the same as the original cars date of registration. To find out the actual manufacture date you'll have to supply the engine number to the manufacturer and get them to send you an official letter stating when it was made (usually only the month/year). They will probably charge an admin fee for this service.

For once something in life is free! Fax engine number off to Ford Technical Information tel. 01922 725266 or post to PO Box 300, Walsal, WS5 4QH and a couple of days later you get a nice letter back on headed paper giving the date the engine was made. Keeps SVA man happy as proof of engine age. Their normal tel. 01922 725 551.
